Every August 20th, Hungary celebrates its own birthday with firework shows across the country. In Budapest, this means a spectacular display over the Danube, from 9pm. This year, the fireworks will be set off from several places – with so many locals and tourists keen to see the show, here are 25 locations for you to get the best view.

The tradition of fireworks on St Stephen’s Day, celebrating Hungary’s founding father, date back to 1829, when the ceremony took place in City Park. Waterside shows began in the early 1900s. War and political upheaval meant that the event was shelved until the mid-1960s, when it assumed its present form – with changes in special effects and variations on the launch site.

This year, the fireworks are being set off from 9pm to 9.30pm at these locations:

  • A section between the corner of Kossuth Lajos tér/Garibaldi utca and the Chain Bridge, four barges and pontoons on the Danube

  • A section of the Danube between the Chain Bridge and Erzsébet tér, three barges and pontoons

Where will it be worth watching the show?

  • Pest embankment: id. Joseph Antall rakpart, Jane Haining rakpart

  • Buda embankment: Sztehlo Gábor rakpart, Friedrich Born rakpart.

As these will be the most crowded places, if you have young kids in tow, you might wish to try:

If you’re up for it, bring a little food and drink, and stake out a good spot a place on Liberty Bridge in the afternoon. It’s harder to picnic on Margaret Bridge, and there will probably be a lot of people there too, so make sure you find a place in time.

After the weekend’s Craft Festival has shut up shop, there’s more room to stroll. Fishermen’s Bastion is always popular.

  • Mansfeld Péter Park

There will be significantly fewer people around these Buda streets than down on the waterfront, the bridges or Buda Castle. Philosophers’ Garden is also a good option for the afternoon, with friends, a picnic blanket and snacks. The renovated Tomb of Gül baba, the city’s most significant monument from the Ottoman era, isn’t quite as spectacular as Gellért Hill, but it may be a good alternative for those who don’t fancy crowds.

  • Harmáshatár hegy, Globe Lookout

  • Széchenyi Memorial, Svábhegy

Fireworks are not only enjoyable from central locations - there are quite a few places in the Buda hills that offer a beautiful view of the city on an average Sunday. With smaller children, this can be the ideal place to end a day out.

  • Up & Down

These various downtown rooftop terraces, quayside restaurants, nightclubs and panoramic nightspots can all be special places to see the fireworks. Many bars and restaurants put on themed evenings, but it is important that you check out the opening hours and reserve. Everyone likes a cocktail on firework night, after all.
