Beyond the shopping centres: other places to escape the heat
The list of designated cooling centres is more diverse than you might expect. Beyond shopping centres and supermarkets, it also includes cultural institutions, libraries, community spaces, municipal buildings and even museums with free admission. If the heat catches up with you in the city centre, places such as the Batthyány Square Market Hall or air-conditioned libraries, including branches of the National Széchényi Library and the Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library, can offer a welcome respite. Museums like the Hungarian National Gallery, Museum of Fine Arts and House of Music Hungary combine cultural experiences with a chance to cool off, while several community centres, cultural houses and municipal customer service offices are also open to anyone seeking relief from the heat.

Where to refill your water bottle in Budapest
Staying cool during a heatwave isn't just about finding shade or air conditioning - keeping hydrated is just as important. Budapest Waterworks helps make that easier through its network of public drinking fountains. This season, 63 drinking fountains and 747 public water taps are available across the city, providing free access to drinking water. Most fountains are made of brushed stainless steel and operate with a push-button tap. For the coolest water, it's worth letting it run for 20-25 seconds before filling your bottle. In addition to the fountains operated by Budapest Waterworks, several district-run drinking fountains can also be found around the city. The nearest refill points are easy to locate through theBudapestGO app.
