The Budapest Summer Festival – a cultural events series held between 1 June and 7 September – offers an even more colourful repertoire this year in the city’s sprawling greenery of Margaret Island and Városmajor Park. Home-grown Hungarian talent and prominent entertainers from all around the world will be giving eclectic performances, including classical concerts, captivating circus shows and soaring opera spectaculars. Over the four weekends of July, Liberty Bridge becomes a car-free public hangout. Numerous exciting events will take place directly above the Danube along this historic crossing, including concerts by local bands, flamenco and salsa performances, zumba, yoga and many more exciting attractions. A rainbow-coloured crowd embarks on a procession through downtown Budapest on 6 July, playing liberating music to celebrate LGBTQ culture and to generate more support. The procession normally spans City Park and Kossuth tér by Parliament, the crowd marching all along Andrássy út, the city’s showcase avenue, while music plays and people parade in costumes. Budapest's first ruin bar and the grandfather of them all, Szimpla Kert hosts a flea market on 13 July. Antiques, retro junk, clothes, photos, analogue cameras, paintings, jewellery, accessories and many trinkets await visitors amid funky surroundings. The Zugliget Chairlift whisks adventurers of all ages up steep slopes towards the summit of János Hill and its crowning Elizabeth Lookout Tower every day. On 20 July, it will operate after hours, so you can enjoy a ride in the dark. Look out for shooting stars as a meteor shower is expected in late July. More details
One of the most popular French chanteuses of our times, Isabelle Geffroy, or Zaz, has been earning comparisons with Edith Piaf and Ella Fitzgerald. For her concert on 21 July, she will be featuring songs from her latest album Effet Miroir for the Budapest Park crowd.
American band Thirty Seconds to Mars experimented with numerous genres on their five LPs from progressive rock through indie to electronica. The group led by the Leto brothers, Jared and Shannon, gained a huge audience thanks to their philosophical lyrics and dark yet catchy tunes. They visit Budapest on 23 July and play at Budapest Park.
