Join in with street celebrations
Around Budapest’s chilly streets and squares, NYE celebrations break out in spontaneous fashion. Chic couples mingle with crowds of sozzled young locals dressed up in off-kilter party hats, blowing whistles as the countdown to 2019 starts. Stalls of feather boas and fireworks line the pavements as frankfurter vendors do a roaring trade – pork is considered a lucky charm in Hungary on New Year’s Eve. A pyrotechnic show explodes over the Danube at midnight, allowing everyone to let loose with music, horns, hugs and kisses citywide. The liveliest areas should be Vörösmarty tér, the Danube Promenade, Oktogon and Nyugati tér.
