Of all the industries impacted by the pandemic, few have suffered more than aviation. In all, 1.7 billion fewer people flew in Europe last year compared with 2019. The annual turnover at Budapest Airport in 2020 was 3.86 million, as opposed to 16.2 million passengers the year before.

Despite the current shutdown probably due to run until spring, there’s a positive feel around Hungary’s main transport hub, as expressed by Budapest Airport CEO, Dr Rolf Schnitzler: “Budapest Airport is ready for the restart of traffic,” he said.
Renewed development
“Although we experienced a significant setback last year, work at Budapest Airport did not stop. Countless investment projects have been completed, and we used the period of low traffic for developments that would have been difficult to implement during normal traffic conditions. A renewed and modern environment awaits the return of passengers, thanks to last year’s infrastructural, capacity expansion and digital developments. Passengers can be assured that the airport is safe from an epidemiological perspective – the health measures applied by Budapest Airport were also certified by international airport and airline organisations ACI and EASA in 2020.”
Over the course of 2020, Budapest Airport saw the opening of a new passenger pier and luggage hall. Contact between passengers has been minimised with automatic systems installed, while the airport has been safeguarding the health of passengers and staff with continuous disinfecting since the beginning of the pandemic.
