From ghostly games at the popular Board Game Café to scary spectacles at the ongoing Murder exhibition, eerie events will be haunting Budapest for Halloween. And when the night falls on the city, zombie-like creatures traverse the downtown streets, crawling into spine-chilling costume parties at clubs and ruin bars. Here’s your compass to the creepiest scenes before and after dark on 31 October.

Murder exhibition comes alive on Király utca

The veil between the worlds of the living and dead is the thinnest on the Day of Halloween. No wonder some spirits will be sneaking through it to wander around, seeking redemption…or give you a tour of the Murder Exhibition.

Halloween fun at the Board Game Café
At the Board Game Café, you can choose from more than 500 games, several of them fit for the occasion, such as Eldritch Horror, based on the fiction of HP Lovecraft, or the nostalgic Ghost Castle. Staff will welcome everyone in a costume for free, so booking a table in advance is highly recommended.

Halloween headlamp run on Normafa

Instead of feasting on all the candy, choose a more strenuous activity this Halloween and join the costumed runners in the murky woods at Normafa. This run is not a race, but a community event over a relatively easy ten-kilometre distance. Wearing a head torch is obligatory, wearing a costume is recommended.

Scary-movie marathon at the Bem Cinema
The Bem Cinema screens movie classics to celebrate the day of the undead. The scary marathon consists of a double feature of Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein at 7pm, Shaun of the Dead at 10pm and a mystery screening at midnight, revealed on the night.

International Halloween Madness at Akvárium

The party organisers of the International Club Tour join forces with Erasmus Life Budapest to host the craziest expat Halloween at Akvárium Klub. Three dancefloors, a costume contest and many more surprises await the up-for-it crowd.

Halloween concerts at Auróra
Don an absurd outfit for Auróra, a community hangout in Budapest’s District VIII, featuring cranky punk bands and the Skeemers, a beach pop ensemble, on the night of Halloween. Those who dress as a sexy nurse enter for free, otherwise admission costs 500 forints.

International Halloween Party at Doboz

For Halloween night, nighthawks go to Doboz, a ruin bar in party central, hosting an Erasmus jamboree until dawn. For 1,500 forints you can take your pick from two dance floors, mingling amid the spooky decoration, mainstream music and R&B till the wee hours. Come in the craziest costumes.

Popstar Halloween at Beat On The Brat
Beat On The Brat is a nightclub dedicated to pop music  trash, evergreen classics and new hits. On Wednesday, iconic girl and boy bands are in the spotlight, many who appeared on the covers Bravo and Popcorn magazines in the ’80s and ’90s.

Tesco Disco – Indie Halloween at Hellobabybar

Shake it to Arctic Monkeys, The Beatles, Everything Everything, Oasis, Franz Ferdinand and White Lies at Hellobabybar, a downtown dance club decorated as Dracula’s Castle for Halloween night. Connecting with the same event, a Trick or Treat pub crawl is also hosted by Erasmus Life Budapest.

Techno Halloween at Tesla Budapest
Creepy techno tunes shake up Tesla for this midweek celebration, where the club’s resident DJs take the decks to get the crowd moving to pulsating sounds.
