A unique new exhibition turns heads on a downtown Budapest square. Madách tér currently hosts the My Budapest Photo Project, an initiative to help the city’s homeless citizens. Images on display were taken by locals without a home and show the city from their perspective. This annual campaign was launched two years ago by the Budapest Bike Maffia, which runs numerous activities to help marginalised people. The team’s current assignment included a distribution of 100 single-use cameras to those who participated in the project, organised in cooperation with London’s Café Art association.

Focal Madách tér is a bustling setting of commuters by day and revellers passing by nightfall. This central location lined by drinking destinations has recently been transformed into an open-air gallery, where photos convey deep-rooted emotions disguised as ordinary city scenes. All of these images were taken by homeless people living on the streets of Budapest and the pictures show the city as they see it.

The My Budapest Photo Project is an annual activity by the Budapest Bike Maffia, a local organization whose initiatives support those in need through community cooking and a food-delivery system. For this project assisted by Fujifilm Hungary, volunteers distributed cameras to the homeless and asked them to capture the city as they experience life here. The result shows a world where pleasant scenes blend with painful realities.

One photo portrays a runner traversing Margaret Bridge and another one is focused on the cross mounted on Gellért Hill. Pets and animals are recurring themes in the images. Perusing these ordinary presentations becomes heartbreaking to the viewer, who – often unconsciously – thinks of what went through the mind of the artists while seizing these moments. Meanwhile, other snapshots display gloomy scenes in their dark reality: life at a homeless shelter, alcohol as a demon, or self-portraits of aging people, living without a roof over their head.

The pictures for the exhibition were picked by a professional panel of judges that viewed more than 500 entries for this contest. Among the currently displayed images,13 photos will be selected to feature in the My Budapest calendar for 2019. Voting is open to anyone through September 16th on the My Budapest Photo Project Facebook page and inside Suelto Bistro on Madách tér. Proceeds benefit the featured photographers.

The exhibition is on view on Madách tér through September 16th.
