Celebrations for World Tourism Day take place in major cities worldwide every year on September 27th, when local officials organize free and discounted events to make cultural and travel-related programs accessible for the general public. This year, Budapest joins the international initiative again with an ever-increasing number of complimentary and low-cost cultural activities, and while most of the programs target domestic travelers, several events are available in English, including free city sightseeing trips, thematic guided tours, exciting exhibitions, and much more.

Established by the United Nations World Tourism Organization in 1980, World Tourism Day is observed in numerous cities around the world as local officials organize special programs to demonstrate important cultural attractions for domestic and international travelers. This annual attraction always revolves around a main message, and in 2017 the event aims to raise awareness of sustainable tourism and promote responsible travel among the international community, along with decision makers in the public and private sectors.

The host country of this year’s World Tourism Day is Qatar, but anyone can join the fun even here in Budapest, where several activities entice urban dwellers to tour the city, including events that are suitable for English-speaking visitors. While participating in some of the programs doesn’t require any language knowledge, attendance at many of the events is only available after preliminary registration and the official website for booking a spot is not optimally English-friendly, so it might be good to have a Hungarian friend to help you with the process. Regardless, below we present some intriguing activities with direct links to their registration page for those who don’t speak the local language:
