There are always so many happenings to choose from in Budapest – exhibitions, parties, live music, festivals, and more – but here is our pick of the bunch for the imminent 72 hours or so:

Friday

8am - 10pm: ELEVEN Ősz on Bartók Béla Boulevard

A Finnish atmosphere fills Budapest’s Bartók Béla Boulevard in District XI during September 22-24, as the special guest of this year’s ELEVEN Ősz (meaning “Autumn”) street festival is Finland. Sauna sessions, food tastings, literary readings, film screenings, and exhibitions await everyone interested in the colorful culture of the Land of a Thousand Lakes between Friday and Sunday. 10am - : World Press Photo Exhibit at the Museum of Ethnography

The annual World Press Photo traveling exhibit – on view between September 22 and October 23 – at Budapest’s Museum of Ethnography presents winning entries of this prestigious photojournalism contest, which aims to portray news milestones of the past year through vivid images of photographers of all genres from all over the globe.

1pm - 10pm: Ráday Korzó on Ráday Street

Between Friday and Saturday, the air above Budapest’s renowned Ráday Street fills with mouthwatering aromas mingling with music, as a total of 40 participating locales join forces in order to show what life is really like on this splendid street. Shops, galleries, bakeries, a historic confectionery, a fragrant flower shop, and a bookstore all open their gates to everyone, while the church and a cool burger place also join in the fun. Come for a stroll and snacks and plenty of cool programs on the whole length of this lovely street.

6pm - 12am: 360 Bar presents: Season Closing Weekend at 360 Bar

Summer is slowly slipping away, which provides a perfect reason for 360 Bar to close the season in a stylish way. Don’t miss out on a chance to enjoy stunning sunsets alfresco one last time above Budapest while enjoying soaring views over the whole city. 360 Bar has something special in store for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday as well, including treats like welcome Johnnie Walker drinks, a daytime party, a brunch party, and live music performances. 7:30pm - 10pm: Szemrevaló Film Festival at the Művész Cinema

A total of 18 films from Germany, Switzerland, and Austria brighten up the big screen between September 21 and 30 at an amazing art-house film theater, Művész Cinema, in Budapest. During the weekend film lovers can see major motion pictures like Marija, From Calgari to Hitler, M – The City Looks for a Murderer, and Liliom with original audio and English subtitles. 10:30pm - 7am: Terence Fixmer [FR], Randomer [UK] X CRIME at Dürer Kert

After the first half year of Crime parties, the organizers start the autumn season with a rowdy night featuring two foreign guests: Terence Fixmer comes from France, while Randomer represents the British scene. The Hungarian Crime duo made up of Ciel & Sagmeister will be joined at the turntable by Lau – known for her energetic sets of flowing grooves – and S. Olbricht, the co-founder of the Farbwechshel label. More details

Saturday

10am - 11pm: Tudományok Fővárosa (The Capital of Sciences) at the Várkert Bazaar

Gigantic robots, a space station, drones, and many other intriguing gizmos await everyone at the most exciting and most inspiring festival about science in Budapest. Talk to astronauts broadcast from NASA, take a glimpse into the world of atomic acceleration, see the rings of Saturn, and meet inspiring Hungarian researchers, engineers, and tech gurus at a truly special location, the Várkert Bazaar, on Saturday.

11am - 1pm: I, Claude Monet at the Uránia National Film Theater

Based on over 2,500 letters and narrated by Henry Goodman, I, Claude Monet reveals new insight into the life on the man who not only painted the picture that gave birth to impressionism, but who was perhaps the most influential and successful painter of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Monet’s life is a gripping tale about a man who, behind his sun-dazzled canvases, suffered from feelings of depression and loneliness. The film screens with original English audio and Hungarian subtitles.

3pm - 7pm: District VII. running and Walking Day at City Park

The residents of Budapest's District VII. organize a running race, where everyone can join the jolly crowd of eager joggers, completing 1,507 meters running or walking. However, if you are a bit more like Forrest Gump (the running part, not the stupid part), you can also try a 5,700-meter-long course.

3pm - 6pm: The World’s Biggest Eye Contact Experiment 2017 – Budapest at Deák Ferenc Square

Be part of a global initiative in Budapest on Saturday. The Liberators International social movement is organizing a worldwide experiment, aiming at drawing attention to the lack of peace in our modern world. The experiment is easy: bold boards will draw the attention of passersby to this initiative; afterwards everyone willing to join takes a seat on the square in pairs facing each other, and looks a stranger in the eyes for a whole minute. The experiment will be recorded, and later will be made into a video alongside footage from all other participating cities worldwide.

8pm - 7am: Earthdance 2017 – Hungary at Dürer Kert

Now in its 21st year, Earthdance International organizes events throughout the world, bringing people together in a single moment of focused intention. Their global synchronized peace meditation takes place in accordance with the United Nations’ International Day of Peace. In Budapest, a colorful lineup takes care of the music at Dürer Kert, where you can dance and party all night long while supporting a great cause at the same time. More details

11pm - 6am: Nick Warren at Akvárium Klub

The prominent pioneer of progressive house, Nick Warren, comes to Budapest for the first time to shake up the Hungarian capital with smashing house hits. Warren is an English house DJ and producer, well-known for his eight albums released in the Global Underground series and as a member of the Way Out West duo. He is also the head of A&R for the progressive house record label, Hope Recordings.

Sunday

9am – 2pm: Szimpla Farmers’ Market at Szimpla Kert

One of the most popular ruin pubs in Budapest – Szimpla on chaotic Kazinczy Street – fills up every Sunday with a friendly artisanal farmers’ market, where you can buy locally made goods and fresh produce such as fruits, cheeses, vegetables, honeys, jams, mushrooms, cold cuts, and homemade lemonades and syrups.

10am - 5pm: Vintage Fair on Zrínyi Street

On Sunday, Budapest’s Zrínyi Street by St. Stephen’s Basilica fills with all kinds of funky furniture. From textiles to lamps and pallet furniture to exciting accessories, you can find all kinds of pretty refurbished pieces lining the whole length of the street, waiting to find a new home.

1pm - 7pm: Miutcánk Picnic at the Garden of Philosophers

A lovely but lesser-known green oases in Budapest, the Garden of Philosophers, fills with a friendly picnic on Sunday, awaiting visitors with badminton, slackline, frisbee, beers, and all kinds of games you can play with your blanket neighbors. This is certainly a nice way to spend a Sunday!

7pm - 9:15pm: One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest at the Bem Cinema

Rewatch a cinematic masterpiece on Sunday with original English audio and Hungarian subtitles. In the film, when Randle Patrick McMurphy (Jack Nicholson) gets transferred for evaluation from a prison farm to a mental institution, he assumes it will be a less restrictive environment. But the martinet Nurse Ratched runs the psychiatric ward with an iron fist, keeping her patients cowed through abuse, medication, and sessions of electroconvulsive therapy. The battle of wills between the rebellious McMurphy and the inflexible Ratched soon affects all the ward’s patients.

5pm - : DJ Palotai presents: Sunday Sessions at A38

Enjoy a free rocking party aboard the A38 Ship on Sunday, when the king and grandmaster of Hungarian DJs, Palotai, plays his favorite tracks on the turntable, enticing everyone onto the dance floor.
