Originally a bakery, Artizán now boasts an oat bar and breakfast spot, and is launching a patisserie focusing on Hungary's most loved cakes. They'll also be serving Minus11 ice creams – currently in Óbuda, with a city centre location coming soon.

Artizán hardly needs an introduction; they're already a frontrunner in Budapest's thriving new-wave bakery scene. Beyond their brilliant breads and baked goods, they consistently deliver top quality across the capital, whether it's through their Fågel porridge empire or their lovely, relaxed all-day breakfast spot, Pan'ni. They currently operate two bakeries, one in the city centre and another in rural Óbuda, both offering excellent lunches.

Artizán's journey actually began in Óbuda. After outgrowing their initial spot, they found a larger corner unit. The original shop was then repurposed solely as a bakery, which also soon expanded into a more spacious setting. This original Artizán location has now been beautifully transformed into their brand-new venture: Mamie.

Mamie, meaning 'grandmother' in French, is where patisserie cakes truly take centre stage. While Artizán always offered sweets like cheesecakes and mixed batter desserts, traditional Hungarian or French patisserie favourites weren't part of their core offering.

This new brand is set to change that, focusing on those beloved traditional Hungarian desserts, all crafted with artisanal precision. Expect classics like Esterházy and Dobos cakes, along with creamy delights and Gerbeaud slices. These are complemented by a selection of French pastries, including Paris-Brest, tropézienne in various flavours, and the timeless mille-feuille.

The décor at Mamie distinctly evokes a comforting grandmotherly vibe. The colours, walls, and textiles showcase a Scandinavian simplicity, while the tables and charming details like paper doilies under the desserts bring to mind a refined, homely setting. Beyond the cakes, you'll find fluffy homemade scones and a 'grandmother's deli shelf' in the corner, brimming with delicious jams and syrups. They serve new-wave coffee, albeit a medium roast, and offer kombucha alongside other refreshing drinks.

Mamie's cakes are not overly sweet, allowing you to truly savour the nuanced flavours of ingredients like hazelnuts, pistachios, or vanilla custard. Their classic cakes have been developed with meticulous care; the Dobos cake, in particular, is exquisite, arguably one of the best around, boasting feather-light cocoa cream and an intensely flavoured, crispy caramel top.

Of course, no patisserie is complete without ice cream. Mamie features an ice cream counter offering delights from Minus11, a brand Artizán recently took over.

If Óbuda is a bit out of your way, don't fret: another Mamie location is set to open in the city centre in a few weeks, promising an even wider cake selection, fizzy drinks, and, naturally, Minus11 ice cream.
