7.30pm-10pm:Félix Lajkó New Year concert at Müpa Celebrate the coming of 2020 with a special concert by Hungarian violinist Félix Lajkó on 2 January.He has enlisted for the occasion a five-member band to complement his unique and thrilling mix of Magyar and Balkan sounds.
9pm-11.15pm: Vertigo at the Bem cinema
A classic Hitchcock, although it wasn’t acclaimed at the time, Vertigo stars James Stewart and Kim Novak in an obsessive film noir immaculately scored by Bernard Herrmann. Screened in English with Hungarian subtitles.
Friday
10am-2pm, 3pm-8pm: Ice skating at the Mayor’s Office
There’s only three more days to take advantage of the free skating rink set up around the courtyard of the city mayor’s office at Városháza park by Deák tér. The facility will be open until Sunday, accommodating up to 150 skaters at any one time.
6pm-4am: S8 Underground Rock Festival at the S8 Underground Club
Two nights of live rock at this lesser-known venue start with the guitar blasts of Memo Pauza and Rocktöltény and finish on Saturday with the no-holds-barred sounds of, ahem, Bastards. After midnight, a disco of metal favourites allows aficionados to air guitar on the dancefloor until silly o’clock.
7pm – : Winter Tribute Madness at the Dürer Kert Is it the Red Hot Chili Peppers? No, it’s the Blue Cold Jalapeños! Hungary’s keenest tribute bands perform the favourite numbers of Linkin Park, Rage Against The Machine and other rock combos in the three indoor halls of the Dürer Kert.
Saturday
Noon-6pm: Record fairat Szimpla Kert Bins and bins of precious vinyl and cassettes line the alternative surroundings of the Szimpla Kert ruin bar. This being Hungary, you may find rare foreign pressings of famous releases, as well as any number of Communist-era curios.
8pm-10pm: The Big Lebowskiat the Bem cinema This revered Coen brothers comedy takes a Chandleresque journey through the world of bowling, gaining a cult following thanks to a stellar script and a convincing portrayal of a middle-aged slacker by Jeff Bridges. John Goodman, Steve Buscemi and John Turturro put in memorable performances around the bowling alley. Screened in English with Hungarian subtitles.
11.30pm-5am:Tesco Disco at Toldi
With David Bowie’s birthday approaching, what better excuse to celebrate the revered late singer than with a night of his tunes plus those of his fellow travellers Iggy, Roxy and Lou Reed? Party experts Tesco Disco are offering free admission before midnight or to the first 100 through the door.

10.30am-1pm: Yoga Brunch at Haris Park
The Yoga Brunchseason for 2020 kicks off in the new winter garden of the neo-renaissance villa atHaris Park by Marczibányi tér in Buda. After a60-minute flow yogasession, participants can feast on vegan brunch food created by the kitchen at Haris Park.
9pm-10.10pm: Paris de Nuit by Recirquel at Müpa With Paris De Nuit, acclaimed Hungarian contemporary-circus troupe Recirquel take their audience into the louche pre-war city. They reveal illusionary moments from the lives of prostitutes and illicit lovers who lived on the edges of society for an evening of lust, love and loneliness inspired by the famous Hungarian photographer, Brassaï. Part dance, part acrobatics and full of choreographic invention.
