Shows, movies, concerts and cultural attractions – Budapest is always buzzing. Each week, we gather all of the important happenings taking place in our favourite city so you can plan ahead. Incorporating our regular movie guide, now updated weekly, here we showcase Budapest’s best events for the upcoming days. Get out and get involved!

Thursday

7pm - : BuSho International Film Festival at various venues

Designed to introduce talented young filmmakers working in the audiovisual field in Eastern and Central Europe, the annual BuSho Festival shows select short movies in original language with English subtitles. In addition to film screenings, themed workshops engage festival guests.

9pm - 5am: Mr. Scruff at Pontoon

Mr. Scruff, a legendary figure on the Ninja Tune label, will play at Budapest’s Pontoon on Thursday. The producer and DJ is well versed in various genres from triphop to house, and a lengthy set can always be expected.

10pm - : Match Party at Budapest Park

Those who fancy playing live Tinder can find the one at this party at Budapest Park. The hottest music of the summer and some old classics should entice everyone to the dancefloor.

Friday

5pm - : Mojo pres Friday at the A38 Ship

Jungle, liquid, deep drum and bass plus cocktail discounts rock the ship on Friday, when DJs spin discs while the sun slowly sets. Entry is free, but you need to wear a wristband.

7pm - : Night of Zoos at various venues

On the last Friday of August, many Magyar menageries welcome everyone with late opening hours and plenty of exciting events. Budapest Zoo awaits with feeding times for bats and hippos, live music and a petting zoo.

8pm - : New Orleans Swing Festival at Müpa

Jazz musician Attila Korb and his international band open the New Orleans Swing Festival with lively tunes by the legendary bass saxophonist Adrian Rollini. The Coquette Jazz Band, featuring Mátyás Papp and Mátyás Bartha, then play evergreen swing from the ’30s. On the closing day, the big band from the Budapest Jazz Club will share the stage with Gunhild Carling. This Swedish multi-instrumentalist is from Postmodern Jukebox, an acclaimed musical collective who create swing covers of pop songs.

Saturday

All day: Budapest Urban Games at various venues

On Saturday, the capital turns itself over to sports activities, with famous landmarks as the backdrop. Besides a run around hilltop Citadella and races at other picturesque points in town, the biggest attraction of the Budapest Urban Games each year is the swim across the Danube by scenic Liberty Bridge.

Noon - : Szimpla Dog Market at Szimpla

Budapest’s most famous ruin pub hosts a special market on Saturday, where you can bring your four-legged friends and browse artisanal accessories and canine-friendly products while socialising with other proud dog owners. Chaotic Kazinczy utca will be car-free for the occasion.

6pm - 11pm: WAVES by Quixotic at TRIP Terasz

Miami Vice vibes take over the TRIP boat on Saturday. The night will be hosted by Hungary's most popular synthwave artist, Quixotic, producer and DJ of the summer's Stranger Synths parties.

Sunday

9am - 2pm: Szimpla Farmers’ Breakfast at Szimpla

One of the most popular ruin pubs in Budapest – Szimpla on Kazinczy utca – fills every Sunday with a friendly artisanal farmers’ market, where you can buy high-quality locally made goods and fresh produce. Szimpla selects the best ingredients from each stall and makes a delicious brunch out of them. Chat with local growers after trying dishes made from their products.

10am - 11pm:Bakáts Feszt on Bakáts tér The last day of this weekend-long local festival at the Grand Boulevard end of Ráday utca sees popular band Budapest Bár bring their jazzy nostalgic take on Central European rhythms to the stage at 8pm. Sunday starts with music and games for children at 10am, followed by a completely mixed bag of performances, most notably by Hungarian jazz songstress Veronika Harcsa and guitarist Bálint Gyémánt at 4.45pm. Admission is 1,500 forints.

6:30pm - : MYRA Live at Intermezzo Roof Terrace

On Sunday evening, rooftop bar Intermezzo welcomes MYRA, who plays a DJ set spinning the hottest hits of the summer. Enjoy the amazing panorama, grilled dishes, cocktails and wine.

Movies screening

;t=1s If you’d like to see English-friendly films, mainly blockbusters, your best bet is always Cinema City, especially the ones at Allee or Aréna, sometimes at Campona and WestEnd. Budapest’s art-house film theatres mainly focus on artsy and indie films, while the Bem Cinema brings back the classics to the big screen, almost always in English.
