Our regular round-up for the upcoming weekend offers plenty of suggestions for where to go, what to do and who should not be missed during the next three days. There are always so many happenings to choose from in Budapest – exhibitions, parties, live music, festivals and more – but here is our pick of the bunch:

Friday

Friday is International Women's Day

10am – David Lynch: Small Stories at the Kunsthalle

Lynch’s own Small Stories conjures up the nightmarish underworld of amorphous creatures and murky corners familiar from his early cinema. This Surrealist exhibition will be on view until 2 June at the Kunsthalle.

10am - : Pancake Festival by the Allee Shopping Mall

The pedestrianised street alongside the Allee Shopping Mall fills with pancake booths between Friday and Sunday. The Budapest Pancake Festival features sweet and savoury varieties and offers alternative options for those with food allergies as well. Besides the pancakes, hot and cold drinks and other culinary treats await visitors.

8pm - : Barabás Lőrinc at Béla

On Friday, Hungarian jazz trumpeter and composer Lőrinc Barabás plays the ballroom at Béla. Besides his own compositions, including numbers from his upcoming album due out in April, works by Béla Bartók will also feature.

11pm - : Dan Shake at Toldi Klub

British DJ and producer Dan Shake left his mark on the global dance music scene with his funk-infused productions and breathtaking DJ sets. He first became famous with his debut album 3AM Jazz Club in 2014, released by Mahagoni Music, and he has been prolific ever since. He plays at the Toldi Klub on Friday.

11:30pm - 4:30am: Carbon Based Lifeforms at A38 Ship

Swedish ambient music duo Carbon Based Lifeforms rock the ship on Friday night. Warm-up acts are Hungarians BB303 and Buxi.

Saturday

8am - 2pm: Czakó Farmer's Market at Czakó Kert

Czakó Piac is a farmer’s market full of friendly vendors, awaiting visitors in the lovely garden of an old Hungarian peasant house on the Buda side. Stalls offer organic products, vegetables, eggs, mouthwatering meat, handcrafted cheeses, wild mushrooms and countless unique specialities not available elsewhere in the capital. The chef at Czakó Kert prepares the best breakfasts and lunchesfrom the delicacies available here while the market is open.

10am - 3pm: Gardrób Secondhand and Vintage Sale at Dürer Kert

The monthly Gardrób Sale is the best of both worlds – you can come as a vendor as well as a buyer. The latter is easy. To expand your wardrobe, just go there and pick from the selection. To get rid of the pile of clothes you never wear, contact the organisers and rent a stand.

Noon - : Markett at Big Lumen

March will see the first Markett design fair of the year at Lumen. The event is organised by independent Hungarian designers who set it up as a collective showcase for their products and to promote talented young artists. If you’re looking for creative, unique gifts, or something to surprise yourself with, make sure to drop by.

7:30pm - : Xiu Xiu at Dürer Kert

Xiu Xiu are an American experimental band, formed in 2002 by multi-instrumentalist Jamie Stewart. They play their avant-garde, noisy tunes at the Dürer Kert on Saturday, showcasing their new album Girl with Basket of Fruit, an allusion to Caravaggio.

11:30pm - : Kruder & Dorfmeister at the Akvárium Klub

One of the defining groups of electronic music in the ’90s, Kruder & Dorfmeister come to Budapest to take the stage of the Akvárium Klub. The Austrian duo will be playing a three-hour DJ set on Saturday.

Sunday

;t=4s 9am-2pm: Szimpla Farmers’ Breakfast at Szimpla
One of the most popular ruin pubs in Budapest – Szimpla on Kazinczy utca – fills every Sunday with a friendly artisanal farmers’ market, where you can buy high-quality locally made goods and fresh produce. Szimpla selects the best ingredients from each stall and makes a delicious brunch out of them. Chat with local growers after trying dishes made from their products.

10am - : WAMP Design Fair at Millenáris

On 10 March, the first WAMP market of the year is being held at the Millenáris. WAMP is a meeting spot for young talent in the fashion industry. This huge indoor expo will feature more than 100 up-and-coming Hungarian designers who showcase their works. In the spirit of spring, the theme of this sale is healthy and sustainable living. Workshops, talks and charity events also feature.

5pm – : The Red Turtle at the Bem Cinema

This colourful animation film for adults has been captivating audiences worldwide. Through the story of a man shipwrecked on a tropical island inhabited by turtles, crabs and birds, thissilent film recounts the milestones in the life of any human being.
