Our regular round-up for the upcoming weekend offers plenty of suggestions for where to go, what to do and who should not be missed during the next three days. There are always so many happenings to choose from in Budapest – exhibitions, parties, live music, festivals and more – but here is our pick of the bunch:

Friday

9am - : Mangalica Festival at Szabadság tér

Every February, Budapest’s central Szabadság tér hosts a celebration of Hungary’s prize pig, mangalica. This buoyant alfresco festival – taking place between Friday and Sunday – features a wide range of mangalica-based dishes cooked on the spot. Alongside, you’ll find leather and craft goods created by local producers, Hungary’s finest wines and pálinka brandy specialities, and live music performances. Entry is free!

1pm - : Finnish Film Festival at the Toldi Cinema

Scandinavian cinema is often bitter and bizarre, but it can also be witty, fun and full of life. With ten film screenings and many special events, such as a festival sauna and a heavy metal concert, the festival aims to showcase the essential features of Finnish culture and cinema throughout the weekend.

7pm - : Tom Odell at the Barba Negra Music Club

After several festival appearances, this time Tom Odell is visiting Hungary on Friday with a stand-alone concert at the Barba Negra Music Club. He will play his trademark songs such as Another Love and Grow Old with Me, as well as tunes from his new album. A few tickets are still available, get them here.

7pm - : Sunset (with English subtitles) at the Bem Cinema

Set in Budapest in 1913, Sunsetis the second feature-length film by Oscar-winning Hungarian director of Son of Saul fame, László Nemes Jeles. Having grown up at an orphanage, a young Hungarian girl, Írisz Leiter, moves to the city with the hope of becoming a milliner at the prestigious boutique of her deceased parents. But the current owner of the Leiter Hat Store, Oszkár Brill, rejects her. Írisz finds out from a stranger that she has a brother, Kálmán. While looking for her family, Írisz discovers dark secrets, and gets caught up in the turmoil of a society fated to fail.

11:30pm - : Los Santos Party at A38

Rock the boat on Friday! Missy Elliott, Jay-Z, 2Pac, Eminem, Ice Cube, Snoop Doggy Dog, 50 Cent, Busta Rhymes and many others fly you back in time with the best hits of the Eighties, Nineties and Noughties at the A38 Ship.

Saturday

11am - : KávéBár Bazár at the Millenáris Park

This tasteful annual expo is renowned for its top-quality specialty coffees and teas, French distillates, champagne made with traditional methods and premium hot chocolates. Countless events and unlimited coffee tasting await!

11am - : Szimpla Flea Market at Szimpla Kert

On Saturday, Budapest’s most famous ruin pub, Szimpla Kert, holds a flea market, offering all kinds of knickknacks from ceramics to toys, accessories, statuettes, old photos, lampshades, teddy bears, paintings, rugs and endless trinkets.

5pm - : Maria by Callas Preview at the Uránia National Film Theatre

Tom Volf’s biopic tells the life story of the iconic Greek-American opera singer in her own words, through performances, TV interviews, home movies, family photographs, private letters and unpublished memoirs. Maria by Callas reveals the intimate story of an extraordinary woman who became a glamorous international superstar. This sneak preview is held at the Uránia Movie Theatre on Saturday, screened in English with Hungarian subtitles.

6pm - Night of Choirs at the MagNet Community House

On Saturday, singing voices fill the halls of the MagNet Community House. The Winter Night of Choirs, sister to the popular summer festival of the same theme, sees 37 concerts in six rooms, all with the participation of different choirs. The night ends with a grandiose closing song, when everyone can join in, including the audience.

8pm - : Irie Maffia Carnival at the Akvárium Klub

Since their formation in 2005, Irie Maffia have become one of the biggest live acts among local audiences. The band melds reggae, hip hop, rock and funk to bring together all the new-generation favourites: the number-one underground diva Sena (it's her b-day, too), MC Columbo and rap-star/father MC Busa. If you plan to go to the concert by this local combo this weekend, get Irie.

Sunday

7pm - : Árstíðir at Dürer Kert

Icelandic band Árstíðir showcase their new album Nivalis in Room 041 of the Dürer Kert on Sunday. With all members singing, ‘chamber pop’ best defines their otherworldly vocal harmonies and indie folk tunes.

7:30pm - : Garden Wonder at somewhere secret

The concept of the Garden Wonder concerts is that guests need to register and only receive the secret address right before the event via email or WhatsApp. On Saturday, the guest performer is Ed Prosek, in Budapest for the first time, playing indie folk. This time, Garden Wonder gives you social challenges to get to know one another.

7:30pm - Seafret at Dürer Kert

Seafret are a music duo of singer Jack Sedman and guitarist Harry Draper from the UK port of Bridlington. According to the story, they met at an open mic night and enjoyed each other’s performances so much they formed a band. They play the main hall of the Dürer Kert on Sunday.
