10:30am - : Unikorn Days at the SUGAR! Shop
On Friday and Saturday, SUGAR! confectioneries are holding their annual unicorn-themed days. This year, if you buy at least two unicorn products, you get a temporary tattoo collection as a gift. Sweets, cakes and drinks await at both their central and Újpest outlets.
Noon - 7pm: Weegee The Famous at the Mai Manó House
As this exhibition is coming to an end on Sunday, this weekend might be your last chance to see Weegee's work in Budapest. The sensational images of Arthur Felling made him synonymous with the Big Apple in the 1930s. In all, 104 of his best photos are on display at the Mai Manó House, delving deep into the after-dark secrets of the city that never sleeps.
7pm - 9pm: Karlheinz Stockhausen: Kontakte - Originale at the Budapest Music Center
In 1961, using his piece titled Kontakte, Karlheinz Stockhausen – who would have been 91 this year – created a lengthy musical theatre performance, Originale, with 24 participants (conductor, street musician, painters, actors, etc). On Friday night, both will be heard at the Budapest Music Center.
8pm - 11pm: The Grand Budapest Film Festival at the Puskin Cinema
Celebrating independent cinema, this free festival provides a platform for filmmakers who don’t necessarily have a large budget, but do have an important vision and a story to tell. From animation to gripping documentaries and heartfelt narratives, a wide variety of genres and styles feature, each film screening with English audio or subtitles.
11pm - 5am: Gerappaaa Weekend at the VOLT Lokál
Don sassy socks, choker necklaces or baggy pants and a baseball cap as the songs of Eminem, the Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, the Pussycat Dolls, the Spice Girls and other treasures from the ’90s trash bag are back again. Head to VOLT Lokál on Friday and/or Saturday night and travel back in time with the hottest hits of your youth. Entry is free.
Saturday
8am – 2pm: Czakó Farmer’s Market at the Czakó Kert
Czakó Piac is a farmer’s market full of friendly vendors, awaiting visitors in the lovely garden of an old Hungarian peasant house on the Buda side. Stalls offer organic products, vegetables, eggs, mouthwatering meat, handcrafted cheeses, wild mushrooms and countless unique specialities that are not available elsewhere in the capital. The chef at Czakó Kert prepares the best breakfasts and lunchesfrom the delicacies available here while the market is open.
11pm - : Young Marco at the Toldi Klub
Marco Sterk aka Young Marco returns to Budapest to play an eccentric and eclectic DJ set, made up of house, afro, tribal, dub, italo, new wave, techno, disco and who knows what else.
5pm - Back To The Future Trilogy at the Bem Cinema
The Bem Cinema celebrates its third birthday on Saturday with the screenings of all three Back to the Future films. One ticket grants entry to all of the movies, which are screened in English with Hungarian subtitles.
7pm - Notorious Reflexes at Vittula
For one night only, iconic Budapest basement bar Vittula is staging an exhibition of photos showing the wild side of Budapest nightlife. Notorious Reflexes showcases the work of international photographers swept up in the city’s hedonistic wave.
11:30pm - : Bladerunnaz presents: Friction at the A38 Ship
Party organisers Bladerunnaz hold their first bash of 2019 at the A38 Ship on Saturday. Their guest for the occasion is Friction, founder of record labels Shogun Audio and Elevate. The British DJ-producer comes with a three-hour-long set, joined by Bladerunnaz residents Incident and Markov.
Sunday
10am - 6pm: Vegan Sunday Market at Anker't
Sunday will see the first Vegan Sunday Market of 2019. The regular community fair at courtyard bar Anker’t showcases organic products from small farms and producers. Besides shopping, you can also take part in workshops and talks. Dogs and children are welcome!
5pm - : Hair at the Bem Cinema
Miloš Forman’s 1979 film adaptation of this popular but controversial musical brings it to life on the big screen. The story is an effective evocation of the hippie movement of the late ’60s. The film left in its wake several iconic songs that many still hum and Berger’s iconic dinner table scene that is something to dream about during family gatherings. Original English audio, Hungarian subtitles.
9pm – : Szimpla Jam at the Szimpla Kert
On Sunday night, a group of music enthusiasts gather at Budapest’s beloved Szimpla Kert, combining a myriad of genres while improvising together. Professional amplifiers are provided, so all you have to do is bring your instrument and a good mood to join the late-night jam session.Show off your self-written songs while vamping on tunes with other guitar heroes.
