Our regular round-up for the upcoming weekend offers plenty of suggestions for where to go, what to do and who should not be missed during the next three days. There are always so many happenings to choose from in Budapest – exhibitions, parties, live music, festivals and more – but here is our pick of the bunch:

Friday

9am - : Ice skating at the City Park Ice Rink

Budapest’s most popular ice rink now welcomes skaters of all ages and skill levels steps away from Heroes’ Square in City Park. This facility is considered one of Europe’s most magical, backdropped by the beautiful fairy-tale Vajdahunyad Castle. Gear rental is also available.

6pm - : Advent by the Basilica at Szent István tér

Central Szent István tér by the Basilica opens its annual Advent fair with all things jolly. The whole Christmas market is centred by a small ice-skating rink open to children, while the biggest attraction is a 3D light show projected onto the Basilica façade every hour after sunset. Prime Hungarian-made gifts, hot drinks and street-food treats are sold from ornate wooden stalls.

7pm - : Tsar B at A38

Belgian progressive R&B singer Tsar B is coming to Budapest for the first time on Friday. Behind the stage name there’s Justine Bourgeus, who mainly draws inspiration from Baroque art and the girls of R&B from the ’90s. Her songs are eclectic, echoing musicians such as Björk, Grimes or Rihanna. She has received critical acclaim from BillboardFaderNME and BBC Radio 1, and generated 15 million online streams.

8pm - Lucy Guerin: Split at Trafó

In Split, choreographer Lucy Guerin places dancers Melanie Lane and Lilian Steiner, one clothed and one naked, in gradually decreasing dimensions of time and space. Guerin reflects on the dilemmas of coexistence in a world of increasing pressure and reduced resources. Split is a thought-provoking physical meditation, delivered by one of Australia’s boldest dance companies. The production won the prestigious Helpmann Award for Best Dancer (Lilian Steiner) and has received numerous other nominations.

8:30pm – : Szimpla Open Stage at Szimpla Kert

Head to the most popular ruin pub in Budapest, the grandfather of them all, and show off your musical talent on the stage. Grab a guitar and sing that song to that special someone – or to your mates. Saturday

5pm - : Donnie Darko at the Bem Cinema

Enjoy a cult film on Saturday, when the Bem Cinema presents writer-director Richard Kelly’s captivatingly strange 2001 debut, Donnie Darko, with original English audio and Hungarian subtitles. Donnie is a bright but troubled teenager who, after narrowly escaping a bizarre accident, is plagued by visions of a monstrous six-foot rabbit, Frank. The creature urges him to perform dangerous and destructive pranks while Donnie embarks on a strange, moving and time-bending journey.

7pm - : Godsmack at the Barba Negra Music Club

American four-time Grammy-Award nominee Godsmack are one of the most successful rock bands of our day. On Saturday, they are coming to Hungary for the first time with their new album, When Legends Rise.

8pm - : Sting and Shaggy at Heroes’ Square

The two Grammy-winning musicians, Sting and Shaggy, are coming to Budapest to promote their collaborative release, 44/786. What seems like 2018’s unlikeliest duo, the potent pair of Sting and Mr Boombastic have been responsible for the year’s best-selling reggae album and one of its most successful tours. On Saturday, they give a free gig at Heroes’ Square.

8pm - : The Glitch Mob at the Akvárium Klub

A big name in rock-electronica, The Glitch Mob are visiting Budapest. The producer trio from Los Angeles will perform at the Akvárium on the last Saturday in November.

11:30pm - : Tesco Disco: Manchester Special at the Toldi Klub

Manchester has been England’s music capital for decades, producing The Smiths, Oasis, the Stone Roses and Joy Division, not to mention the newer generation such as The 1975 or Blossoms. This special edition Tesco Disco party on Saturday will be an all-night Manc celebration at the Toldi Klub.

Sunday

9am-2pm: Szimpla Farmers’ Breakfast at Szimpla

One of the most popular ruin pubs in Budapest – Szimpla on Kazinczy utca – fills every Sunday with a friendly artisanal farmers’ market, where you can buy high-quality locally made goods and fresh produce. Szimpla selects the best ingredients from each stall and makes a delicious brunch out of them. Chat with local growers after trying dishes made from their products.

10am - 6pm: WAMP Design Fair at Millenáris Park

WAMP is a regularcommunity event and design fair, a meeting spot for creative and trendsetting young talent. On Sunday, local designers showcase their limited-edition collections offering clothes, jewellery, bags and other accessories.

10:30am - : BB'z Sunday Brunch at BB'z Bar and Grill

A cool focal hangout, BB’z throws a Sunday get-together for late risers. An American-style buffet table, an omelet station, salads, mini burgers, homemade cheeses and many tasty treats await. You get a Mimosa for a welcome drink, while your four-legged friend is greeted with fresh water. The resident DJs ensure a great atmosphere, while games entertain on a chill-out Sunday.
