Our regular roundup for the upcoming weekend offers plenty of suggestions for where to go, what to do, and who should not be missed during the next three days. There are always so many happenings to choose from in Budapest – exhibitions, parties, live music, festivals and more – but here is our pick of the bunch:

Friday

8pm - : The Florida Project at the Művész Cinema

Attend the pre-premier screening of the new favorite of film critics, The Florida Project, in Budapest. The film follows a precocious six year old and her ragtag group of friends whose summer break is filled with childhood wonder, possibility and a sense of adventure while the adults around them struggle with hard times just outside the imagined utopia of Disney World. The film screens with original English audio and Hungarian subtitles and can be watched at the same time and place on Saturday as well.

8pm - 10pm: Harmony Jazz Workshop: Szakcsi Lakatos Béla Trio at the Budapest Jazz Club

Béla Szakcsi Lakatos has been performing since the ’50s in genres such as mainstream jazz, jazz-rock, free improvisation, New Age and Gypsy jazz. The musician, who has been honored with the most high-ranking Hungarian awards, focuses on combining modern and classical, world and jazz music.

8pm - Jérôme Bel: Gala at Trafó

Gala is a special event that blurs the lines between failure and success, presented this weekend in Budapest on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 8pm. As part of Gala, some 20 performers from different generations and backgrounds tread the boards in all kinds of fancy or funny outfits. Some are professionals, others less so, but they all dance, taking it in turns to show off a pirouette, a moonwalk or other talented tricks that the others have to copy.

Saturday

10am - 3pm: Visiting the Holy Crown at the Parliament

On the 40th anniversary of the return of the Holy Crown to Hungary, the House of Parliament holds an open day, when visitors can get a look at the Grand Hall, the Dome Hall and the Holy Crown for free. Entry is from Alkotmány Street. Regular guided tours are also available on this day at the Visitor Center.

8pm - midnight: Elvis Comeback at Akvárium Klub

On Saturday evening, Akvárium Klub celebrates two important anniversaries in one; the birth of Elvis Presley and that the Elvis TV Special aired half a century ago, in 1968. Three bands take the stage, shaking the walls with wild rockabilly, evoking the special sounds of The King.

11:30pm - Bowie at Toldi Cinema

David Bowie would have turned 71 on January 8th, and to celebrate his life, the Toldi Cinema throws a special party on the Saturday before. Expect the best hits of the pop legend, but the party will also be a tribute to Bowie’s fellow travelers, so songs of performers such as Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, Joy Division, Blondie and Talking Heads will also be featured. Entry is free of charge until midnight.

Sunday

This weekly market – enhanced with a homely Hungarian ambience – features various gastronomic demonstrations and entertainment performances to accompany the culinary jamboree, where up-and-coming vendors offer handmade delicacies such as tasty vegan dips, creamcheese and scrumptious vegan cakes, as well as artisanal sausages and aromatic smoked meat for the carnivorous, and endless kinds of edible treats.
