The spirit of shalom shines brightly around the world during Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights spanning eight days and nights of joyful celebrations and rituals based on ancient traditions. This year, Hanukkah lasts from sundown on December 12th through the afternoon of December 20th, and here in Budapest many events welcome everyone to join a diverse variety of festive activities honoring Judaic culture, ranging from traditional candle-lighting ceremonies to fun gatherings featuring concerts by modern Magyar musicians to ice-skating around a menorah at the city’s most famous rink.

Candle-lighting ceremonies

Europe’s largest Jewish temple is located here in Budapest, and on the first night of Hanukkah the Dohány Street Synagogue invites worshipers to join the initial candle-lighting event of this ancient holiday amid its historic settings (December 12th, 5pm-6:30pm; more details). Meanwhile, a gigantic menorah is erected on central Pest’s Nyugati Square, where every evening of Hanukkah the public is welcome at candle-lighting ceremonies featuring lively musical performances and traditional dances (December 12-19, 6pm to 9pm nightly; more details).

Festive gatherings

Several Budapest hotspots observe Hanukkah with high-spirited gatherings featuring customary Jewish cuisine, family-friendly traditions, and concerts of both classic melodies and modern tunes. Downtown’s popular Gozsdu Udvar complex of trendy hangouts hosts a free party for all ages with a candle-lighting ceremony, live music, and kosher donuts for everyone on December 13th from 6pm to 10pm (more details). Budapest’s beloved Auróra community center presents two different events to honor Hanukkah – on December 14th the Zugoj ensemble plays a klezmer concert blended with contemporary beats for a groovy jamboree of Judaic revelry beginning at 8:30pm (entry: 1,000 HUF; more details), and on December 15th they host a Hanukkah dinner with musical entertainment and slam-poetry performances starting at 8pm (entry: donation suggested; more details). Naturally, the Jewish Quarter’s stylish Mazel Tov restaurant is also celebrating the Festival of Lights with a pair of Hanukkah Brunches enhanced with live jazz, a garden market featuring Israeli delicacies and handcrafted gift items, and hot latkes served fresh from the kitchen from 10am to 2pm on December 16th and 17th (more details).

Hanukkah ice-skating celebration

Continuing what is becoming a cherished Hanukkah tradition here, Budapest’s most famous ice-skating site – located in City Park near Heroes’ Square, with majestic Vajdahunyad Castle for a backdrop – becomes a gala of sparkling candles and gliding rabbis when a large menorah is placed in the center of the rink for celebrants to admire while frolicking on the slippery surface. This year the open-air Hanukkah skating shindig is happening on December 18th from 8:30pm to 10:30pm at City Park Ice Rink (entry: 1,500 HUF; more details in Hungarian).
