All Saints’ Day

November 1st is a national holiday in Hungary. When darkness descends upon the day families pay a visit to the cemeteries where their dearly departed relatives are buried, and adorn the gravesites with beautiful bouquets and commemorative candles. This is a deeply rooted tradition in Hungarian culture, but is not regarded as an overly despondent occasion. Taiwanese Documentary Film Days

Weight-lifter girls, homosexual men, a Vietnamese singer who finds herself in the traditional world of operas, models with open-minded and brave thoughts about the female body and a little boy who lives in the middle of the ocean yet does not hear the noise of the waves; these motifs all highlight the major focus of this year’s Taiwanese Documentary Film Days, man and woman. Arcadia Retro Game Exhibition

If you are a gamer or a true geek at heart, this event is highly recommended for you. Between November 3rd and 5th nearly 250 machines flicker, tinkle and jingle at this exciting interactive festival held at Dürer Kert. Visitors can play all kinds of games trying out the oldest, the biggest and the most popular pinball machines, as well as the legendary Sound Stage pinball from Odds and Evens. Furthermore, more than 30 retro computer and console video games form the history of the genre, as well as a KonzolGame stand, an Xbox One simulator with a seat and steering wheel, a Sony Playstation VR, Playstation 4 machines with new Call of Duty WWII and a Guitar Hero stand await. St. Martin’s Day Festival

Every November 11th, Hungarians commemorate one of the country’s patron saints, St. Martin of Tours – who was born within Hungary’s boundaries – with gluttonous celebratory gatherings. This is the day when you'll find enticing feasts all round Budapest, and diverse restaurants offer special meals and goose delicacies. The city’s biggest celebration isthe grandiose indoor wine festival at the historic Gellért Hotel, held between November 9th and 12th, awaiting everyone with wine tastings, live entertainment and special goose-based meals. Verzió International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival

Verzió is an annual documentary film festival highlighting human rights with thought-provoking mini movies, held between November 14th and 19th this year at various cinemas. The film festival aims to promote mutual understanding between cultures, open society, democratic values, rule of law, freedom of expression, and political and cultural pluralism. Furthermore, it strives to expose abuse and human rights violations throughout the world by presenting creative and high-quality documentaries. Most films screen with original audio and English and Hungarian subtitles. The opening film of this year’s festival, Nowhere to Hide, tells a first-person story of a hospital worker in the war zone of central Iraq. More details

Hungarian Wine and Cheese Festival

Between November 25th and 26th, Vajdahunyad Castle will be home to a tempting wine and cheese festival featuring a wide assortment of Hungary’s finest harvest-season flavors. Visitors can sample all kinds of recently bottled Magyar-made wines, all to be savored with various locally made cheeses. Live entertainment and traditional wine-related ceremonies make this event complete, and the visitors of the festival can also enjoy the exhibition of the Museum of Agriculture for free. More details (in Hungarian) Christmas Markets

Towards the end of November everyone slowly starts feeling the festive spirit of the most wonderful time of the year. When the last autumn leaves fall, holiday-season fairs already start popping up on various squares around the city. Scented with spicy mulled wine and chimney cakes baking over open fires, these Christmas markets charm visitors of all ages with all kinds of Hungarian handicrafts, live folk-music concerts, delicious delicacies, as well as several surprises. Vörösmarty Square starts the fun as early as November 10th, St. Stephen’s Basilica awaits visitors for an Advent Feast from the 24th, while dates are to be announced for a fair at the Castle Garden Bazaar, and at various other points of town.

Kodaline

Best-known for their song “All I Want”, Irish rock quartet Kodaline come to Budapest on November 24th as part of their Europe tour. Having released two successful albums and a strong run of singles, Kodaline have already charmed audiences all over the world. After a period in the shadows, recently they broke cover with their excellent new single, “Brother” and its highly moving music video – that is definitely worthwhile to watch. Kodaline steps on stage in the heart of downtown, at Akvárium Klub.

Jewish and Israeli Film Festival

With a broad lineup of the latest movies depicting contemporary Jewish culture and heritage, the Budapest Jewish Film Festival – held between November 29th and December 3rd – is the largest event of its kind in Central and Eastern Europe. The schedule features a fresh selection of recent pictures from all over the world, and is complete with exciting attractions.
