During October 22nd-23rd, many of Budapest’s historic locations welcome the public with free events to commemorate heroic insurrection by Hungarians against the oppressive Soviet regime. From a solemn flag-raising ceremony on Kossuth Square to guided tours around the Parliament House, to special displays at the House of Terror and the Museum of Military History, diverse attractions evoke Hungarian history and highlight the momentous events and locations of October 23rd 1956.

Memorial Torchlight Procession

On October 22nd, following a memorial ceremony at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics – a venue that served as a significant site during the 1956 events – a torchlight procession departs at 4:30pm from outside the building. Crowds march along the Danube riverfront, continue to Szent Gellért Square, Várkert rakpart, Ybl Miklós Square, Clark Ádám Square, Fő Street, before reaching Bem Square, where the procession concludes with solemn speeches.

Kossuth Square

On October 23rd at 8am, Hungary’s national flag will be hoisted above centrally located Kossuth Square in front of the Parliament building. Spectacular military processions and dynamic drumbeats complement the dramatic ceremony.

Parliament House

On Monday between 10am and 5pm, free guided tours walk groups around Hungary’s neo-Gothic-style government palace to view some of the building’s most impressive sites, including the Grand Stairway, the central Dome Hall and the Holy Crown of Hungary. Preliminary registration is not required to join these tours, but lengthy lines are expected in front of the building. For more information, visit the Parliament’s official website.

House of Terror Museum

Housed within the former secret police headquarters of the State Security Office, the House of Terror Museum serves as the backdrop of official speeches starting from 3pm on Monday. On October 22nd and 24th, this unsettling exhibition space welcomes anyone who wants to learn about the atrocities that occurred in Hungary under the post-war communist regime. The museum is open from 10am to 6pm and free entrance is provided for visitors who register at the ticket office inside the building.

Museum of Military History

Displaying a range of weapons, battle scenes and Hungarian army uniforms, the Museum of Military History (Budapest 1014, Kapisztrán Square 2-4) awaits visitors with free entry on October 23rd between 9am and 5pm. This Castle District destination offers tin-soldier painting sessions for kids, handicraft workshops and complimentary guided tours to visitors on Monday.

Hungarian National Gallery

This palatial Buda Castle site displays the history of Hungarian art from medieval Gothic to the revered Mihály Munkácsy and beyond. On October 23rd, the permanent exhibition at the Hungarian National Gallery is open to visitors free of charge. Meanwhile, photo aficionados can view the current temporary showcase by multiple-award-winning artist Péter Korniss, whose visual documentation unveils the vanishing lifestyles of Hungarian and Transylvanian peasants, and other sociocultural matters. The museum is open from 10am to 6pm.

Museum of Ethnography

It will soon be your last chance to visit this elaborate edifice found opposite from Parliament on Kossuth Square. While the Museum of Ethnography is closing down at its current location at the end of November, relics of Hungarian folk art can be viewed for free on October 23rd. In addition to the permanent collection, some of the museum’s temporary displays (except World Press Photo 2017) are also accessible for no charge then, including the Adventures in Footwear exhibition presenting hundreds of shoes from the 19th and 20th centuries from around the world. On Monday, the museum is open from 10am to 8pm.

Light painting

On Sunday and Monday, colorful lights will illuminate several key sites around Budapest with spectacular displays – you can view the sparkling shows at the following locations and times:

October 22nd from 6pm to 11pm
Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (Budapest 1027, Bem rakpart 47), House of Terror Museum, Chain Bridge

October 23rd from 6pm to midnight

Vintage tram rides

Between October 22nd and November 4th, heritage streetcars serve two main Budapest tram lines. Between Móricz Zsigmond Square and Széll Kálmán Square, an antiquated vehicle will trundle along tram line 6 from 4pm to 7:30pm on weekdays and between 2:15pm and 7pm at weekends and on public holidays. Between the Kelenföld pályaudvar and Deák Ferenc tér end stations of tram line 49, old-school carriages run from 4pm to 7pm on weekdays and from 2:15pm to 7pm at weekends and on public holidays. Passengers can hop aboard vintage streetcars to ride along the two lines and sightsee around Budapest with ordinary tickets and passes.
