Whether decorated with holiday-themed characters or top-quality candies, the carefully designed doughnuts of Mr. Funk – a new downtown-Pest hotspot for high-calorie creativity – are as much a treat for the eye as they are for the mouth, especially as these delights are just as sweet as they should be. If combined with one of Mr. Funk’s shakes or hot chocolates, the sugar rush (and good mood) will be doubled; meanwhile, at the next counter, they also make tasty bagel sandwiches that can be a lifesaver if you are starving but have to hurry.

Stepping into Mr. Funk is like entering the most colorful room of our childhood dreams, where we are greeted by a cartoon version of the place’s titular anthropomorphic doughnut (the name Mr. Funk is a play on the Hungarian word for doughnut, “fánk”). Even the basic doughnut varieties are pretty special here (like strawberry with marshmallows, chocolate with M&M’s, etc), but you can also sink your teeth into unique Nutella-filled or coffee-flavored versions too. The possibilities are almost endless, because the founders are continuously experimenting with new variations.

The ingredients are all top-quality, and customers can follow every step of the baking process while peering through the glass counter. However, what convinced us that this is Homer Simpson’s dream destination was the first bite: the candy coating and the fillings are just as sweet as they should be, so it’s very easy to get hooked on Mr. Funk’s donuts. We have to admit that we had difficulty with stopping at just one (or two, or three).

If you’re not craving something sweet but instead would go for a tasty bagel, fear not: they have that too, available with various top-quality toppings (for example, with egg cream and tomato, or green apple and salmon). They aren’t as big as the ones at INEZ a few corners away, and aren’t made with traditional bagel bread, but our complaints end here. What they lack in size, they make up for it in taste, and they can easily be a lifesaver if you are in a hurry and need to grab something on the go.

Mr. Funk has also launched its own donut truck too, which was recently spotted at the Advent Feast by St. Stephen’s Basilica. However, all year round we can now count on Mr. Funk’s headquarters as a good destination for sweet-toothed people – and the sugar rush only gets stronger while sipping on a shake (available in classic flavors like strawberry or banana). If you’re not afraid of your dentist’s reaction or the calories, just go ahead and enjoy!
