St Martin’s Day is traditionally a celebration of great food, good company, wine and, of course, roast goose. But who says it has to last only one day or be enjoyed in just one way? This November, the feast stretches over more than a week, with SIMALIBA Belvárosi Csárda and ARAZ Restaurant serving up rich, seasonal goose-inspired menus. And for those craving a literary twist alongside their meal, Crowne Plaza Budapest sets the scene for an evening of conversation and fine dining with acclaimed author György Dragomán.

According to tradition, St Martin’s Day, celebrated on 11 November, is the time to feast on goose. The story goes that St Martin, a humble 4th-century bishop, once hid in a goose pen to avoid being appointed to his post — but the noisy birds gave him away, earning geese a lasting place in the holiday’s lore. Marking the end of the harvest season and the last big feast before Advent, the day has long been celebrated with hearty meals and good wine. Here’s where to enjoy the best St Martin’s Day flavours in Budapest this year.

SIMALIBA Belvárosi Csárda

As its name suggests, SIMALIBA Belvárosi Csárda is an unmissable stop for goose lovers around St Martin’s Day. Just a few steps from Vaci utca, this charming downtown restaurant turns Piarista Street into a true goose feast zone between 8 and 16 November, with every course inspired by the bird of the season — from soup and pâté to mains and even dessert. This year’s menu features ginger goose soup with matzo dumplings, goose liver pâté with apple–pear ragout, rosé duck breast with mustard-glazed carrots, goose risotto, and crispy leg with red cabbage, rounded off by a classic chocolate goose-foot dessert in a glass. Fine Hungarian wines and pálinka pair beautifully with the dishes, while live music on Saturday and Sunday evenings completes the experience. True to its name as a Belvárosi Csárda (Downtown Tavern), SIMALIBA brings authentic countryside flavours and folk ambience right into the heart of the city. Recently listed among Tripadvisor’s Top 10 restaurants in Budapest and honoured with a Gault&Millau award, it’s undoubtedly one of the best places in town to enjoy goose this November.
