One of Klauzál Street’s most beloved and popular brunch spots, Grumpy Budapest, has once again shown why it’s adored by so many. Celebrating its 6th anniversary, the internationally recognised café has undergone a complete transformation — now welcoming guests with a brighter, more spacious interior, a refreshed menu, and an upgraded kitchen that promises even more delicious creations.

The cheerful team behind the Grumpy Empire

Behind it all stands Szilvia Ispán, better known as Sziszi – the quietly determined founder who built Grumpy from scratch. After gaining hospitality experience abroad and on ocean liners, she brought her expertise back to Budapest’s lively party district, where she opened a small, loveable one-woman brunch spot. Her positive outlook and commitment to quality quickly paid off: Grumpy flourished, and the time came to grow.

Instead of launching a new location, Sziszi chose to expand the original, both in size and in spirit. She’s no longer running the place alone but alongside two talented and always-smiling colleagues – because, despite the name, everyone at Grumpy is full of joy.

Even before the renovation for Grumpy’s expansion began — around eight or nine months ago — I brought two incredibly talented colleagues on board, Vivien Sipos and Adrienn Boros, Sziszi shares. That way, by the time the guest area grew, we’d already be prepared and set up for success.

– she explains. The new menu takes guests on a culinary journey around the world, with a strong Asian influence. The coconut-based tom kha gai soup (HUF 4,550) is the creation of Adrienn, who spent several years working in a Thai restaurant, while the mango–passion fruit cheesecake (HUF 3,150) is Vivien’s exotic dessert masterpiece. Having spent four months in Asia, Sziszi knows exactly what authentic flavours should taste like — and she couldn’t be happier with the team’s recipes, a sentiment clearly shared by their guests.

The selection is more colourful than ever

As the space expanded, so did the kitchen — and now the menu finally features every dish close to Sziszi’s heart. At Grumpy , the classic breaded chicken schnitzel (HUF 4,750) comes with creamy potato salad, while the generous serving of homemade cottage cheese dumplings (HUF 3,150) with sweet breadcrumbs is easily enough for two or even three people. The layered potato casserole (HUF 3,950) and the already-mentioned Asian soup are also crowd favourites, though the signature brunch staples remain the true stars of the show.

The Hungry Mama omelette (HUF 4,750) – the most iconic of all Grumpy’s egg dishes – was born one morning after a heavy night, when two American guests came in craving something hearty to cure their hangover. What started as a simple three-egg omelette quickly turned into a feast, piled high with everything from artichokes to cherry tomatoes — and somehow, it just worked.

The final version that made it onto the menu has been refined slightly, with fewer toppings but the same generous spirit. Crispy bacon and golden fried onions form the base, while homemade sausage chips from rustic Hungarian kolbász add a local twist. A touch of spinach, cheddar, and edam cheese ties it all together, making each bite rich, satisfying, and full of flavour. It’s one of those dishes guests keep coming back for — a true Grumpy classic.

And for those seeking a more indulgent start to the day, the café even offers a luxurious snail-and-champagne breakfast — because at Grumpy, mornings can be as homely or as glamorous as you like.

Among the ladies’ favourites are the superfood dishes , such as the Buddha bowl with fried eggs (HUF 4,250) – served with guacamole, hummus, couscous, and salad , and also available in a vegan version . Another popular choice is the crispy courgette (HUF 3,250) , a light yet flavourful option that proves just how delicious meat-free dining can be. The courgette, coated in beer batter and fried to golden perfection, is paired with a mild ricotta cream spiced with chilli oil , then topped with pine nuts and sun-dried tomatoes for a balanced, elegant finish — it even works beautifully as a starter.

And then there are the croissants, which have achieved near-legendary status. Both the Nutella and pistachio versions (HUF 1,950 / 2,650) are so generously filled that guests swear they could outshine even the trendiest artisan bakeries in town.

The drink menu is just as impressive. The Good Morning Jasmine blends bourbon with jasmine syrup for a floral twist, while the Gin Basil Smash bursts with the freshness of real basil. For something a little cheekier, the Porn Star Martini combines vodka, passion fruit, and prosecco — a pretty and playful favourite.

If you prefer something classic, the Mimosa with orange juice and prosecco is perfectly refreshing, while the spicy Bloody Mary will have you ordering a second round before you know it. Coffee lovers are also in good hands — from the rich double espresso to the silky latte, every cup is made with high-quality beans. And for those seeking the ultimate hangover cure, the freshly squeezed orange juice is vibrant, zesty, and instantly revitalising. (Cocktails: HUF 2,250–4,450; coffees: HUF 650–1,300; orange juice: HUF 950/dl)

All day long brunch

Grumpy isn’t the kind of place where you’ll stumble upon calm, quiet mornings at the weekend — it’s where you can experience the buzz of city life in a cosy, welcoming setting. Sziszi greets everyone as if an old friend has just walked through the door, and even at full capacity, she somehow manages to find a table within ten minutes. Drinks arrive almost instantly, and while the food may take a little longer, it’s always worth the wait.

There are no overcomplicated or overly reimagined dishes here — just high-quality ingredients, balanced flavours, and a genuine warmth that appeals to both young brunch-goers and long-time regulars alike.

The crowd at Grumpy Budapest is as diverse as it gets — from groups of young friends and expats to loyal regulars well past sixty, everyone feels right at home. The atmosphere is warm and familial, sunlight pours through the windows, and the newly expanded space feels effortlessly inviting.

Here, every smile, bite, and sip carries the same message: brunch isn’t just a meal — it’s a celebration of life. Open until 5 pm, Grumpy perfectly captures Sziszi’s philosophy: brunch should never be confined to a specific hour. So yes, ordering an omelette at three in the afternoon simply because it makes you happy is exactly what this place is all about.
