Budapest’s food and drink scene rarely stays still for long, and the past few weeks have brought another handful of new addresses to discover. Some are made for a quick morning coffee, others call for a long brunch or a table full of sushi, but each brings something different to the city. We’ve picked five recent openings that are well worth checking out this summer.

Antigonè Cafe

Walking into Antigonè feels a little like stepping out of present-day Budapest for a while. Close to Oktogon, the café and bakery leans into a vintage aesthetic, with carefully chosen details and vintage-style cups making even a simple coffee feel like a small occasion. The atmosphere is refined without being overly formal - the kind of place where you immediately want to slow down and look around before deciding what to order. The counter is filled with pastries and desserts, but Antigonè is also made for longer mornings, with a brunch menu for those who want to stay beyond coffee and cake. It's a lovely addition to this busy part of the city, especially if you like your brunch with a little old-world charm.

Picopico

Ráday Street has no shortage of places to stop, but Picopico makes a convincing case for adding one more to the list. The small espresso bar keeps things refreshingly simple: a warm, minimalist interior, a relaxed atmosphere and good coffee, with both lighter and stronger beans to choose from depending on how you like your morning cup. There's nothing overdone about the space, and that's part of its charm. Warm details and a cosy feel make it easy to linger longer than planned, while its Ráday Street location makes it equally handy for a quick coffee on the go.

Nolita Matcha&Coffee

If you're forever searching for Budapest's newest matcha spots, Nolita should already be on your radar. Coffee drinkers are covered too, while toasted sandwiches turn it into an easy option for a light breakfast or lunch. Nolita also reaches beyond the usual café concept, with its own merchandise and a strong lifestyle feel woven into the space.

Café Arkitekter

One of Budapest's most aesthetically pleasing recent openings comes courtesy of Studio Arkitekter, the architecture studio behind the interiors of several familiar Budapest venues. Raw concrete, repurposed marble and furniture designed by the studio itself give the café a distinctive identity without making it feel like a showroom. The food is just as playful with the architectural theme. Alongside quality coffee, breakfast dishes and sandwiches, you'll find desserts inspired by Bauhaus and even concrete formwork. The café is also intended to host exhibitions, talks and events around architecture, art and design, making Arkitekter somewhere you might come for coffee but find plenty of reasons to stay.

SUSI by Cork

For the final stop, we're swapping coffee and brunch for sushi. SUSI by Cork is expanding with a new location on the Buda side, bringing its playful take on Japanese food to District III. Rather than sticking strictly to the classics, SUSI has built its menu around colourful, contemporary combinations, making it a good choice when you're in the mood for sushi with a twist. There are plenty of rolls to explore, but don't skip the warm dishes. The crispy coconut shrimp comes with a fruity passion fruit sauce - sweet, tangy and crunchy in the same bite - while the Cheesy Roll combines coconut shrimp with fried cream cheese and Parmesan.
