With Budapest back in full swing, a whole range of live acts are coming to town from foreign parts this autumn, many of the shows rescheduled from 2020/21. Look out particularly for Tricky on the A38 Ship and Patti Smith at Müpa.

1/10

Emmet Cohen Trio

To the delight of Hungarian jazz fans, this American pianist, a child prodigy, is bringing his combo to Hungary. The night before a major show at Ronnie Scott’s, the Emmet Cohen Trio play the Budapest Jazz Club on 12 October. Now 31, the eminent keyboard player has recently released a series of recordings, Live from Emmet’s Place in New York, garnering millions of views online.

2/10

Patti Smith

A last-minute addition to the Liszt Fest International Cultural Festival, godmother of punk Patti Smith will perform at Müpa on 13 October, after just played two nights at the Albert Hall. Such is still the drawing power of this poet/songstress pioneer, who set the world alight with her debut album Horses in November 1975, the same week that the Sex Pistols played their first gig in London. Now, nearly 50 years later, Patti Smith has written an acclaimed memoir, The Year of the Monkey, and has been involved in various film projects. Expect a few old hits on the setlist for the Müpa show.

3/10

Tricky

Embarking on a huge European tour this autumn, starting in Skopje and winding through the Balkans until it gets to Budapest on 19 October, Bristol legend Tricky is promoting his most recent release, Fall to Pieces, recorded in Berlin where the trip hop singer now resides. While most of his other European shows are in larger venues, here Tricky tackles the more intimate space of the A38 Ship, whose faded industrial feel should suit the grief-stricken despair of the music perfectly.

4/10

Parra for Cuva

Cologne-born Nicolas Demuth, aka Parra for Cuva, produces a soft, embracing, emotional electronica that should gently rock the A38 Ship on 22 October. Jazz, pop and indie creep into the equation, as evidenced on his 2018 album, the dreamy Paspatou. Melancholy and melodic undercurrents mingle in the mix.

5/10

Alanis Morissette

The seven-time Grammy-winning Canadian singer-songwriter calls in at the Papp László Budapest Sportaréna on 3 November as part of a world tour to celebrate 25 years of worldwide smash, Jagged Little Pill. Also featured in the setlist will be a few numbers from her 2020 release, Such Pretty Forks in the Road. The venue will be arranged like a theatre, with only seats available. Order your tickets through Live Nation or Fun Code.

6/10

Nouvelle Vague

The brainchild of French producers Olivier Libaux and Marc Collin, Nouvelle Vague transpose punk and new-wave classics into acoustic bossa novas. If this has you running for the exit, don’t worry, the first bars should lure you gently until you’re relaxed back on the chaise longue. On 3 November, they return to Budapest to play at the A38 Ship.

7/10

MEUTE

Like Nouvelle Vague (see above), song rearrangements are the name of the game where the 11-member Hamburg-based MEUTE are concerned, as they will demonstrate at the Akvárium Klub on 9 November. This German band, however, booms with brass and percussion, performing well-known techno and house classics in this fashion. It’s pretty frenetic, and well worth a listen.

8/10

The Stranglers

These faux punk has-beens take to the road to promote their most recent album, Dark Matters, featuring the playing of original keyboard player Dave Greenfield shortly before he died. Former bandmate Jet Black has also bowed out, leaving Jean-Jacques Burnel to front these former pub-rockers. They showcase their 18th studio album at the A38 Ship on 12 November. The video for the single taken from the album, This Song, features former football star Stuart Pearce, a Stranglers superfan who has seen the band 300 times and counting.

9/10

Lydmor

Jenny Rossender has been performing as Lydmor for the best part of a decade, releasing a string of albums brimming with ice-cold, self-penned electro pop. The most recent, Capacity, made the leap into the mainstream Danish Hitlisten. The singer-songwriter appears at the new Dürer Kert on 24 November, bringing with her just that little touch of winter.

10/10

IAMDDB

Lisbon-born, Manc rapper of Angolan parentage and musical heritage, Diano De Brito appeared at the last Sziget Festival in 2019 and now returns to Budapest, a series of EPs and mixtapes in her locker. IAMDDB hits the road this autumn with 25 dates, including the Akvárium Klub on 12 December.
