“Incendies” with English surtitles
Incendies has been one of the most moving and significant theatre performances of the past year in Hungary. On January 9th, the Radnóti Theater will be presenting the play with English surtitles that can be followed from the theater balcony. In the production, Nawal, a mother of two who emigrated to Canada after the Lebanese war, notifies her two children in her will about the existence of their father and a brother whom they have to find and hand over an envelope. When the children embark on this journey, immersing themselves in the horrors of the war, they reveal something truly unspeakable about their mother’s past that will leave the audience guessing and gasping for breath. Budapest Circus Festival
In 2018, Europe celebrates the 250th anniversary of the birth of modern circus. The opening ceremony of the Circus Festival takes place at the Budapest Circus on January 8th, followed by a week-long series of stunning classic and contemporary performances at various venues in Budapes t by troupes from around the world. The festival will be completed by accompanying events such as film screenings, conferences, circus workshops and exhibitions. More details

Budapest Jazz Club Tenth Birthday
The Budapest Jazz Club is the oldest of its kind in Budapest with a reputation that goes beyond the country’s borders. In recent years, some of the most prestigious exponents of the genre have played here, and now this classic hangout is celebrating its tenth anniversary on January 12th and 13th. The festival-style jazz party starts with Fenyves Márk Trio, a band full of young talent, followed by the BJC Big Band, the house band, who will have three Hungarian guest celebrities joining them for the evening. The opening act on the second day will be SOLATI band, who combine masterly neo-soul and jazz, while one of the most popular bands in Hungary, the Balázs Elemér Group, will also be performing. At that point, a huge cake will be cut and handed out to everyone on stage. Both nights end with a BJC Jam session, allowing jazz lovers to celebrate until sunrise. More details

Zúzmara Half Marathon
Hardcore joggers gather at the Hungexpo, Budapest’s extensive fair center in District X, to tackle a half marathon in the depths of winter on January 14th. The race starts at 10am, while from 1:45pm participants can challenge themselves over a ten-kilometer or a five-kilometer distance during the Running Festival, all taking place at the same location in the afternoon. Mulled Wine Festival
Between January 19th and 21st, a Mulled Wine Festival will take place on the Buda side, along the promenade of stalls lining the Allee Shopping Center. Visitors to this event can beat the cold thanks to an impressive assortment of delicious hot drinks, coffee concoctions, hot chocolate variations, cocoa, special teas, grog, punch, mulled beer, pálinka and other warming tipples. Budapest International Documentary Festival
The power of documentary is indisputable, bringing to life key issues by utilizing an arsenal of artistic tools. This festival – held between January 23rd and 28th – features 50 extraordinary and award-winning documentaries from nearly 30 countries, including Oscar nominees I am not your negro and Watani, my Homeland. Every screening will be followed by a meet-and-greet with the creators, during which members of the audience can delve deeper into themes arising from each documentary. More details
