Anticipating the milder spring season, Hungary’s Farsang (“Carnival”) celebrations are held nationwide to scare evil spirits away as revelers wear peculiar outfits and create surreal scenes based on centuries-old traditions. There are several Carnival celebrations held across Hungary, starting from the beginning of the year on Epiphany (January 6th) all the way through Ash Wednesday, with the UNSECO-acknowledged Busójárás Festival in Mohács (200 kilometers south of Budapest) being the grandest spectacle – held this year from February 23rd through 28th, the citywide celebration features distinct groups of parading locals wearing furry costumes and spooky masks, while marching and dancing amid dynamic drumbeats and boisterous folk music. This year, MÁV Nostalgia launches a Busó Express train service that departs from Budapest’s Kelenföld Railway Station to Mohács on February 26th, providing an easy way to visit the festival while enjoying onboard music and good vibes throughout the journey.
However, revelers who want to join joyful jamborees here in Hungary’s capital are provided with a diverse assortment of options for enjoying Farsang festivities citywide:

LEO Farsang
Have you ever submerged into an authentic dive bar in the Magyar metropolis? If you haven’t ticked this experience off your Budapest bucket list, then the Carnival season certainly provides a good reason to head to Black Cat Pub (Budapest 1051, Múzeum körút 41), an underground urban watering hole, where now you can join a Gatsby-themed jamboree.
