To quote Shakespeare, all the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players: and that is especially true at a circus. But let's be honest – all of us wanted to be acrobat or a juggler at some point of our life. Luckily, Budapest is populated with all kinds of artistes who love to entertain enthusiastic crowds, so if you are looking for another kind of entertainment during wintertime, the Hungarian capital is the place to be. We recommend three venues with outstanding contemporary-circus programs to warm up by admiring amazing grace during the chilly season.

Capital Circus

Capital Circus, Budapest’s permanent big top in City Park, held its grand opening in 1981. They have moved a number of times, but their current building has been its headquarters since 1971. It is the only stone circus of Central Europe (with a capacity of 1,850 seats), and it can be visited in any kind of weather. Capital Circus has everything one would expect from a place with such a name, including acrobats, big cats, and daredevils on horseback. From November 12th, it awaits audiences with a classic show titled Dima’s Christmas, featuring different animal shows, acrobatic and juggling performances, and aerial acts. It will surely take your breath away!

MüPa

The Palace of Arts (Művészetek Palotája) is the most important building of the Millennial Culture Center of Budapest. It opened in 2005 and ever since then, it hosts not only concerts but all kinds of cultural draws, including new-circus performances: for example, during December 14-17, Recirquel Contemporary Circus Company’s The Naked Clown will be performed. The show traverses the borders of circus arts, dance, theater, and music, and features no less than five dancers and four trampoline artists, plus music compositions from the European music of the 19th and 20th centuries.
