If you have never crossed Sziget’s iconic K Bridge entryway, never got a hoarse voice in less than 24 hours, never got lost in an illuminated „forest surrounded by hundreds or strangers, or never carried a double sleeping mat from Filatorigát to its final destination, then we have some tips and hints for how you should plan and spend your days at Budapest’s biggest annual good-time gathering. The Sziget Festival has its specific customs and rules that all revelers are advised to learn as early as possible.

1/10

Choose THE PLACE!

You’re probably not coming to Sziget alone. Instead of trying to memorize the entire festival map, it’s fair enough if you agree on a permanent meeting point that is easy to recognize, unique, somewhat centrally located, and well lit – in case you lose each other. In this regard, the portable toilet, where you saw a guy dressed as a bear just a couple hours ago or the last place you got drunk are NOT the best options.

2/10

Choose your campsite wisely, at a fairly good location!

Sure the best places are taken first, but if you’re vigilant enough, you can always find a nice location to set up your tent. It’s an advantage to camp near a major site that’s easy to find, and the place should have sufficient light, as ending up in a freestyle capoeira pose is guaranteed between the tent cords in the dark. Besides, make sure that the portable toilets are found nearby, and don’t even think of placing your tent near any major walkways, otherwise you’ll be rewarded with golden rain by tipsy passersby. Finally, try to avoid picking a venue with non-stop programs – it’s a rather unpleasant experience to wake up to out-of-tune guitar sound.

3/10

Don’t try to attend every concert!

Even seasoned festivalgoers often forget this basic rule: it’s better to pick 4 or 5 programs a day instead of trying to attend each and every concert. This way, you can avoid constantly rushing and stressing about whether you will be able to catch a certain program or not.

4/10

Don’t be afraid to cheer at a concert without your friends!

The best-case scenario is that you and your friends all agree on what concerts to attend, but if there’s a performer only you like, don’t miss the gig only because the rest of the group doesn’t want to accompany you. Listening to the music of your favorite musician or band for an hour or two, while being apart from your companions is easy to bear and you might even make new friends. When the concert is over, you can always meet your group at THE PLACE (mentioned above).

5/10

Prepare for extreme weather!

Even if you have the perfect plan laid out, the weather can ruin your festival experience if you are not prepared for the extremes. If it’s too hot, you might need a fan, alongside plenty of water, and when it’s cold you need to wear a sweater, while when it rains a waterproof poncho comes in handy. If it’s pouring rain and you see people around you wearing branded raincoats, ask them where they got them from – the source might be closer than you think.

6/10

Eat and drink (not just alcohol) properly!

It’s important to eat, while consuming non-alcoholic drinks is essential during a long day and night at the festival. You shouldn’t plan on getting drunk fast without eating, as that can have unpleasant consequences. We can always grab a hamburger, hot dog or any of the local hearty treats that are available across the festival ground.

7/10

Find the best toilets before the sun goes down!

While portable toilets can be surprisingly clean on an ordinary Monday morning, you might be wary of the blue cabins if this is your first festival. In this case, just choose the pre-installed flush toilets that are also available across Sziget, while as an extra feature this year they even mounted mirrors above the washbasin.

8/10

Look for daytime chill zones!

After a long night, there’s nothing better than a good afternoon nap, but it’s not always as relaxing and comfortable inside the tent as we first imagine it. Luckily, the festival has plenty of chill zones where revelers can rest – one of the most ideal zones for lounging is the Cökxpon Chill Garden equipped with palm trees, shaded areas, and plenty colorful rugs to rest on.

9/10

Look for phone-charging stations or bring a portable battery!

Electricity is one of the greatest treasures at Sziget. Smart phones run out of juice quickly (we yearn for the good old Nokia 3210 and its week-long lasting battery). So try to find the available charging points or as an even better option, bring a rechargeable, portable battery with you. However, try to limit your phone usage for taking pictures and finding your friends, live in the present and enjoy your time at the festival!

10/10

Enjoy your first Sziget experience!

It’s needless to get annoyed because of the weather or because you couldn’t join a group of friends at a concert. Some things won’t go according to original plans, but you can still have a fantastic time at Sziget: party with the cheerful crowd and soak in the festival vibe, so next year you can return as a seasoned Sziget citizen!
