National Táncház Festival and Fair
The National Táncház Festival and Fair (“Táncháztalálkozó” in Hungarian), taking place during April 2-3 at Papp László SportArena, is a multifaceted and colorful folklore festival which includes performances by groups presenting their own local traditions, traditional folk artists and musicians, dance groups, professional and amateur folk dancers, dance-house bands, and dance lessons from all over the Carpathian Basin. Throughout the two days, you should find some time to leave the dance floor and discover all the goods that will be on sale at the fair: traditional crafts, publications, recordings, and so on. Of course you can only dance to music, so there will be concerts too: on Sunday, Félix Lajkó, the world-famous Hungarian violin player, will present his newest album “Folk” with special guests. Titanic International Film Festival
Titanic ’16, the 23nd edition of Hungary’s most popular international film festival, will take place during April 7-16, at five different venues: Toldi Cinema, A38 Ship, Uránia, Sugar Cinema, and Puskin Art Cinema. Eagerly anticipated by the film industry each year, Titanic specializes in films from all around the world that are not distributed in Hungary, or will arrive to Hungary with a delay, balancing art with the mainstream. The 42 different films will be screened with original audio and no subtitles, but simultaneous Hungarian translation is usually available through headphones. The festival’s opening film will be Martin Butler’s Tanna, a story about a forbidden love affair set on a remote Pacific island, and the closing film will be Luca Guadagnino’s A Bigger Splash, a strange drama about the vacation of a famous rock star and a filmmaker. Budapest Spring Festival
The 36th Budapest Spring Festival, happening during April 8-24, awaits visitors with a program that involves many types of arts, with events in classical music, opera, jazz and pop, world music, dance, and the visual arts. With the best Hungarian performers and prominent global stars, the Budapest Spring Festival is a truly special occasion presenting Hungarian and world premieres of musical and theatrical productions, and presentations with partner institutions throughout its 17 days. Beer, Burger & Barbecue Festival
The first Beer, Burger & Barbecue Festival, taking place during April 15-17 at – is, well, about what you’ve already guessed. Budapest’s best street-food eateries will serve traditional and special dishes, while the best local and international artisanal beers will be on tap. Forget about fast-food restaurants and what you’ve eaten there, and find out everything about barbecue, the American way of eating, and all the things related to them. Budapest100
Budapest100 is a civil urban festival, aiming to draw attention to the buildings surrounding us and the human values that are around us every day. During April 16-17, you can get a closer view at the capital’s century-old buildings through thematic guided tours, re-enactments of historic events, fascinating photo exhibitions, and spine-tingling attic expeditions, while engaging with many of the city’s most notable edifices. Traveling around the city is usually also made easier throughout the festival’s two days with discount taxi rides and a vintage tram. Telekom Vivicittá Spring Half Marathon
Kicking off on Margaret Island, the Telekom Vivicittá Half Marathon, organized between April 16-17, traverses shorter and longer distances (7 km, 10 km, 21 km) in the heart of Budapest, and whichever challenge you take depends on your level of fitness. Back in 1984, the Italians thought that encouraging the citizens of small, crammed, but beautiful Italian cities to do some running will make them recognize the hidden beauties and values of their own towns, so this two-day spring jogging jamboree will also be a good way for you to (re)discover all the things that makes the capital such a wonderful place to be. International Book Festival Budapest
The International Book Festival Budapest, held for the 23nd time during April 21-24, is a recognized event of the international world of books, as one of the important professional and intellectual forums of the region. The festival hosts representatives of global literature, scientists, and artists from more than 25 countries. The intellectual festivities feature such cultural programs as meetings with the authors, book-signing sessions, book launches, various presentations, roundtable discussions, concerts, theater performances, exhibitions, and movie screenings. It is also a professional and business forum, where trade meetings, conferences and lectures are held on the key issues of the book market and of reading habits. Get Closer Budapest Jazz Fest
Get Closer is the latest addition to Budapest’s ever-growing festival scene, which will host renowned names of Hungarian and international jazz culture at MOMkult during April 22-24. It aims to bring fans of this musical genre closer to contemporary jazz styles, in every sense. In contrast to the traditional stage setting, at a Get Closer concert, the musicians stand and play on stage(s) encircled by the audience. Leaving behind the familiar and adapting to an absolutely new performance situation is a challenging and exclusive experience, both for the audience and the musicians. Performers include international superstars like the Billy Cobham Band, GFS Trio, and the Richard Bona Quintet, while Syrius Legacy, the Csaba Toth Bagi Balkan Union, and Bass Loco will represent the local jazz sphere. I Bike Budapest
Join masses of two-wheelers rolling on the city’s car-free streets on April 23rd during the “” event, a mass parade of urban cyclers turning the Hungarian capital into a bike-friendly metropolis. Last year the initiative enjoyed massive success as thousands pedaled through Budapest’s ordinarily bustling lanes, enjoying a smog-free ride on this special occasion. If you want to be part of this eco-friendly happening, cycle to the starting point on Közraktár Street in District IX, from where the crowd kicks off at 3:30pm to glide along the Danube banks, , Museum Boulevard, the Buda Castle Tunnel, and across the , before approaching . HYPERSPACE XX.
Hyperspace is one of the leading Eastern Europe-based techno festivals, and on April 23rd, it celebrates its 20th birthday! If you are familiar with the one-day-long festival, you already know that it means a lineup featuring the most acclaimed international and local DJs. If you run through the biggest names that will be spinning the best cuts from the genre, you can find some of the most significant characters in techno’s recent history: Ben Klock, the resident of Berlin’s Berghain club; Rødhåd, the founder of the famous Dystopian club nights; Marco Bailey, known for his own MB Elektronics and his radio show; and Electronic Fore or Rebekah, a Birmingham-based DJane famous for all-killer-no-filler sets. Népszínház Carnival 2016
A Carnival. A colorful, cheerful, flowing mass of people. Lots of smiling faces, dancers, musicians, and magicians all over. The feeling is both familiar and exotic. You can imagine this, can’t you? It will all be reality in Budapest this month when they organize the first-ever Népszínház Carnival. Where else than in District VIII, the most vibrant and culturally diverse area of Budapest. It will be more than a simple Carnival: that’s how they want to strengthen tolerance and social acceptance towards migrants from around the world, without whom this neighborhood is almost unimaginable today. They welcome everyone with a full-day program on the 24th of April.
