Weekend thrills on Children’s Island

Every year when summertime kicks off, amusing performers flock to Óbuda Island to provide memorable weekend breaks for kids of all ages with the annual Children’s Island festivities. Every Saturday and Sunday from June 4th through June 26th, Óbuda Island in the Danube just north of downtown becomes a fairground for acrobats, clowns, singers, dancers, and many other entertaining artistes who turn this giant parkland into a vast open-air playground. Environmental education is a focus of attractions like making handicrafts, sport programs, theater shows, puppetry, an adventure park, and the Center of Scientific Wonders, all providing joyful experiences – and best of all, entry is free.

Sightsee through the eyes of a child

A guided city tour always provides new perspectives and a stronger bond to any destination. A metropolitan ramble with kids can often be challenging to say the least, but luckily Budapest Underguide designed a specific tour package that surely won’t be boring for youngsters. The two-hour walking tour features treasure hunts and stimulating assignments, making this an exciting way to visit Budapest’s best family-friendly locations without the standard hissy fits. To avoid burning a deep hole in your pocket, get your friends together and share the cost of the tour; prices start from 139 euros for one adult and a child, but the price depends on the number of participants, with more people the cost goes down with each individual.

Ride the train with kid conductors

Traveling over 11 kilometers across the peaks of the Buda Hills, the Children’s Railway is the planet’s longest narrow-gauge railway line where the children are in control (a fact recently certified with a Guinness World Record). Established during Hungary’s era under communism, this vintage vehicle winds through pristine nature between Hűvösvölgy and Széchenyi Hill, presenting passengers with spectacular panoramic views. We can hop on board for a family-friendly journey and glide along past across nine stations, as kids collect tickets and serve as conductors (don’t worry, the engineers are still adults). The train operates daily from May to August, and Tuesday to Sunday from September to April.

Wild times with amazing animals

Elephants, zebras, camels, and koala bears reside in the historic Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden, making it a perfect spot for capturing close-up views of numerous species. However, there are several other great animal-friendly places in and around town worth checking out with youths. Found amid Budapest’s most popular parkland isle, the petting zoo of Margaret Island puts smiles on childrens’ faces by offering pony rides among their animal enclosures – and if horseback riding is a favorite family activity, hop into the saddle in Pest’s District XVII at the woodland ranch of Akadémia Riding School, offering lessons from beginner to advanced levels along with cross-country gallops; call ahead to arrange an appointment.

Akadémia Riding School:
Address: Budapest 1174, Régivám köz 37-40.
Directions: Take bus 168E from Örs Vezér Square to the “526. sor” stop, followed by a 20-minute walk from the bus stop with signs to lead the way.

Hang out at a café for kids

Serving as a café, a clubhouse, a community space, a playground, and a cultural center all in one location, Hellóanyu (“Hello mom” in Hungarian) is in the heart of Budapest’s District VII. Praised by many metropolitan parents who were looking for a place to socialize while their kids play peacefully, Hellóanyu offers yoga lessons, a playhouse, a study corner, childcare, and a variety of workshops, while super-healthy lunches, massage services, and a family-focused atmosphere provide relief for parents. A great space for drizzly summer days, or when the sun is sizzling, or anytime.

Address: 1077 Budapest, Csányi Street 7.

Active adventures out and about

For families that are into sporty excursions, Budapest is never short of great options. Urban dwellers choosing to survive summertime heat by a pool can head out to Margaret Island’s massive Palatinus Bath to make a splash with water slides and varied pools to cool the young and old alike. If a gargantuan playground is more interesting, we can move from tree to tree and feel like an adrenaline-rich action hero at Challengeland in District XII. This adventure park atop the Buda Hills provides parents and kids with some fun obstacles to overcome, like ropes courses and tunnels to climb through. Meanwhile, more mild sporting fun awaits a bit further away from the city bustle at the nearby town of Budakeszi, where a nice 18-hole mini-golf course encourages guests to putt through a series of ramps and tubes in as few strokes as possible.

Budakeszi mini golf:
Address:
Budakeszi 2092, Márity László Road
Open:
Tuesday - Sunday 11am to 8pm
Directions: Bus 222 from Széll Kálmán Square to Zichy Péter Street
