There are more and more restaurants in the city which are offering great dishes at a reasonable price (you can read about these places if you click on this link). Unfortunately sometimes we just don’t have the time to leave the office to get ourselves some lunch, so we either have to order something or get a takeaway. But what about the local catering business? Do they offer the old and boring dishes or can we order something from a more new-wave cuisine. Is the food promising or deterrent? Is it just bearable or is it something exciting? We tried the offers of five different catering services hoping that we can help you to pick the one that lives up to your expectations.

Vegafutár – Promising dishes

This business has been running for five years, which must mean something. No meat, no fish and no eggs – this is the trinity of their most important catchphrases. The dishes that sometimes happen to be quite international are all right and we can say the same about the service and the background work as well. Vegafutár is not a bad choice; especially for those who would like to eat healthier and in a more conscious way and for those who would like to try new dishes, even in the third week of the schedule.

We tried the miso soup with vegetables, a light casserole and the mango lassi – in other words we were on an alkalizing diet. No disappointment, no hard feelings for the place. The only thing we were kind of missing was a more authentic environment, but we all know that a white plastic food container is a white plastic food container and an office is an office.

Total Food – The classics

The first thing we noticed about the offers of Total Food is that there is a wide range of ‘traditional and classic’ vegan meals; there are different kinds of soups, pastas and vegetable dishes. There are a few modern, refreshing new-wave meals as well. The line of vegetables dishes – which we eagerly call főzelék in Hungary – is rather strong especially since these meals are very popular in the spring and in the summer season. The prices are pocket-friendly – the menus and the special offers cost about 630 to 710 forints.

The dishes we tried include pear soup, turkey with fruit sauce and with potatoes and a slice of chocolate-mint cake. The turkey sort of brought back the elementary school canteen memories but in a good way. The chocolate-mint cake was nice and refreshing but we were not crazy about the soup.

Inter FOOD – diabetic dishes

Inter FOOD offers healthy, tasty, preservative and additive free meals. What really surprised us, in a positive way, is that there is a whole selection of diet dishes for those who would like to lose some weight and for those who have special needs when it comes to food as well. Another great thing is that there are light, diet-friendly alternatives for the classic dishes. You should check out their menu and try some of their offers!

We ordered meat soup (with beef), a Thai pasta dish with vegetables and chicken and last but not least Tyrolese apple strudels. The soup is not the kind of one that will help you get better when you’re awfully sick (but who is sick in the middle of the summer anyway?), the strudel is okay but nothing special, the Thai pasta on the other hand is actually rather impressive.

Teletál Ételfutár – with Laci Benke

The motto: the competition has a wider variety of quality food at a reasonable price. This is a piece of America in Hungary. But is it working? In some ways yes, it is. They offer dishes for people with diabetes, for vegans, for pregnant women and for those who take good care of their hearts and vascular system. An interesting choice of target groups but things seems to work out effectively.

Our picks included sztrapacska (which is a kind of noodle) with cottage cheese and fried bacon, fish with lobster sauce, with braised brussels sprouts and other vegetables and mákos guba which is a traditional Hungarian dessert with poppy seeds. The sztrapacska was a bit chewy, bit since we all know that this is not a home-made traditional version we hardly make a big deal about it. The sea fish with the lobster sauce was tasty but the veggies were not looking particularly good – it kind of ruined the whole image. The mákos guba was a great success.
