One of Pest-Buda Bistro's greatest charms is its setting in the historic Castle District. The cobbled streets, nearby landmarks such as Matthias Church and Fisherman's Bastion, the welcoming interior of the centuries-old inn, and the terrace overlooking the picturesque Hess András Square all contribute to a unique atmosphere that appeals as much to locals as it does to visitors.
Where history sets the scene
The building itself has been welcoming guests since 1696, when it originally opened as an inn. More than three centuries later, it continues to play an important role in the Castle District, now housing Pest-Buda Bistro on the ground floor and a boutique hotel above. It's a place where history feels alive, while the food, hospitality, and atmosphere remain firmly rooted in the present.

When terrace season arrives, guests can choose between a smaller seating area in front of the bistro and a larger terrace just a few steps away on the charming Hess András Square. Open daily from noon until 10pm, the latter provides the perfect setting to linger over a meal, a refreshing cocktail, or coffee and cake. From here, you can take in views of the fairytale-like spires of Matthias Church or look down the cobbled Fortuna utca towards Vienna Gate Square, making it one of the most atmospheric spots in the Castle District.

Classic Hungarian cuisine with a seasonal touch
Pest-Buda Bistro's menu centres around traditional Hungarian cuisine, with classic dishes presented in an elegant, contemporary style. Alongside favourites such as goulash soup, fisherman's soup, and Újházi chicken soup, guests will also find seasonal dishes and rotating chef's recommendations, all available both inside the restaurant and on the terrace. During our visit, we tried the green pea cream soup, a refreshing summer starter topped with parsley oil and crunchy celery leaves, served with a delicate goat's cheese crisp on the side.

Among the starters, traditional favourites such as Hortobágy-style savoury pancakes and house-made duck liver pâté remain popular choices. On warmer days, however, the garden salad offers a lighter alternative, combining cherry tomatoes, radishes, green apple, crunchy carrots, and a citrus dressing. During our visit, we opted for the version topped with warm goat's cheese medallions, though it is also available with chicken.

Classic Hungarian comfort dishes are among the menu's highlights, including chicken paprikash, stuffed cabbage with sour cream and dill, túrós csusza topped with crispy bacon, and Brasov-style mangalica pork served with garlic-roasted potatoes. One of our favourites was the slow-cooked beef cheek stew, accompanied by potato dumplings and pickled pearl onions. Cooked for hours until beautifully tender, the beef was paired with a rich, paprika-forward sauce made with high-quality Szeged paprika. Unsurprisingly, we found ourselves mopping up every last bit with slices of sourdough bread, while a side of cucumber salad with sour cream provided the perfect accompaniment.

No traditional Hungarian menu would be complete without a selection of breaded favourites, and Pest-Buda Bistro delivers with dishes such as Wiener schnitzel, crispy chicken thigh, and cordon bleu. We opted for the fried cheese, which stood out thanks to its quality ingredients and house-made breadcrumbs, giving it a distinctly homemade feel. Served alongside a tomato salad with pickled red onions, it made for a simple yet satisfying combination.

With summer just around the corner, we opted for a three-scoop ice cream sundae topped with fresh fruit, though chocolate sauce is also available for those with a sweeter tooth. The sundaes are made with Zuki's artisanal ice cream, developed exclusively for the restaurant, with pistachio and mango among our favourite flavours. Those in the mood for a more traditional dessert can choose from classics such as Gundel pancakes, apple strudel, and sour cherry pie, while the chef's seasonal recommendation currently features mákos guba reimagined as an elegant layered dessert.

The terrace is also an ideal spot for a coffee break, with a wide selection ranging from classic hot coffees to refreshing iced versions. The drinks menu includes Hungarian wines, Spíler craft beers, draught beers, uncomplicated cocktails, as well as house-made lemonades and iced teas, making it easy to settle in and enjoy the atmosphere for a little longer.

It's easy to see why Pest-Buda Bistro has earned thousands of positive reviews across travel and dining platforms. Combining traditional Hungarian flavours with a historic setting and warm hospitality, it offers an experience that appeals to both visitors and locals alike. During the summer months, the charming terrace only adds to its appeal, inviting guests to slow down and savour the atmosphere of the Castle District.
