Shows, concerts and cultural attractions – Budapest is always buzzing. Each week, we gather all of the important happenings taking place in our favourite city so you can plan ahead.

Friday, 23 May

DOWNTOWN FESTIVAL 

From 23 to 25 May, the Downtown Festival brings a lively mix of live music, family activities and design stalls to Szabadság tér and Erzsébet tér – and best of all, it's completely free to attend. The main stage on Szabadság tér will host a strong line-up of local favourites, including Vad Fruttik, KFT, Péterfy Bori & Love Band, Irie Maffia and Pál Utcai Fiúk, while  Erzsébet tér turns nostalgic on Friday, with performances by  Rezső Soltész and András Csonka.  On Saturday, the focus shifts to world music, bringing a more global rhythm to the city.

Families should head down on Sunday morning, when Erzsébet tér fills with children's concerts, puppet theatre, a petting zoo and classic outdoor games.

HENGERMALOM OPENING – BUDAPEST'S NEW CULTURAL HOTSPOT

Valyo's newest project, Hengermalom, opens its gates from 23 to 25 May with a weekend full of discovery, creativity and community spirit. The former industrial site has been transformed into a green riverside space, where you can explore the courtyard, join building tours, and get involved in workshops.

Expect screen-printing, open-air cinema, live music and DJ sets, plus talks and presentations on rethinking play in urban spaces. Sunday brings a special Children's Day programme, complete with a flea market and family-friendly activities.

TELEP 15 – BIRTHDAY WEEKEND

15 years ago, TELEP opened its doors with a mission to become more than just a bar – it aimed to be a creative, community-building space in the heart of Budapest. Since then, this iconic venue has become a second home for artists, designers, musicians, DJs, skaters, bikers, and creatives of all kinds.

To celebrate its 15th anniversary, TELEP is throwing a special birthday weekend on 23–24 May, packed with events that reflect its eclectic spirit. Expect a photo exhibition showcasing snapshots from the past 15 years, a DEEPIN' SESSION special, a latte art competition, and an exciting lineup of DJ sets throughout the weekend.

MBH BANK GOURMET FESTIVAL 

From 22 to 25 May, Millenáris once again hosts one of Hungary's most beloved culinary events: the MBH Bank Gourmet Festival. This year's theme, 'Favourites', invites top chefs, bakers and producers to share the ingredients, dishes and stories closest to their hearts.

Among the festival's culinary ambassadors are Fruzsina Farkas (The Green Sommelier), Szabolcs Szabadfi (Szabi, the baker), and Szilárd Tóth (SALT), who bring favourites like artisan pizza, mangalica pork creations and kombucha to the spotlight. With over 70 restaurants, bakeries and culinary ventures offering unique festival menus, there's something for everyone – from modern takes on Hungarian classics to trending international bites and bold new-wave desserts. Come hungry – and ready to discover your new favourite.

BRIDGE CHARITY WARDROBE SALE

If you love fashion, appreciate unique pieces at fair prices, and care about sustainability, don't miss the Bridge Charity Wardrobe Sale on 23–24 May at Kult7.

This special pop-up brings together local designers, fashion brands and celebrities, who've donated standout items for a good cause. All proceeds support women affected by trauma, abuse and homelessness – helping them take steps towards a safe and dignified life. Entry is free, but registration is required. Come for the clothes, stay for the cause.

NOR/MA BAKERY BIRTHDAY

The minimalist, Nordic-style Nor/ma bakery near Kálvin tér is turning six, and they're inviting everyone to celebrate on Saturday, 24 May. Known for its sourdough breads, buttery pastries and great coffee, Nor/ma is marking the occasion with a special birthday selection of both sweet and savoury bakes. What's more, thanks to their open kitchen, visitors can get a peek behind the scenes at the kneading, rolling and baking that bring their creations to life.

V4 SPORTS UNITY FEST

Head to the Margaret Island Athletics Centre this weekend for a vibrant celebration of sport, community, and spring sunshine – all set in one of Budapest's greenest gems. From beach volleyball to chess, the event offers a dynamic line-up of tournaments and activities – all equipment is provided, so all you need to bring is your energy!

Alongside the competitions, you can enjoy thrilling dance and martial arts shows, as well as workshops hosted by participants from across the Visegrád countries. If you're playing in a team, only the team captain needs to register via this form. Spectators are equally welcome to come cheer and soak up the buzzing atmosphere.

Sunday, 25 May

CHILDREN'S DAY & HEROES' DAY AT BUDA CASTLE

On Sunday, 25 May, families are invited to enjoy a day of free festivities and culinary experiences at Buda Castle in honour of Children's Day. The Főőrség Restaurant will serve up exquisite dishes, while the Budavári Riding Hall will host colourful children's programmes, and the Csikós Courtyard will come alive with exciting demonstrations. The event is all about bringing families together to discover Hungary's rich historical traditions in a fun and engaging way. Additional all-day activities include face painting, a crafts corner, pony petting, a baby-friendly area, and much more. Entry is free of charge, but registration is required in advance.

FREE MUSEUMS DAY 

On 24–25 May, the Museums May Day (Múzeumok Majálisa) returns for its 28th edition, transforming the Hungarian National Museum and its garden into the country's biggest museum festival and cultural picnic.

Held in honour of ICOM's International Museum Day, the event celebrates museums as welcoming, accessible spaces for everyone. Over the weekend, visitors can enjoy free entry to the museum's exhibitions, take part in family-friendly activities, and browse nearly 100 museum booths from across the country set up in outdoor tents.

CHILDREN'S DAY BRUNCH AT FLAVA

Round off your weekend with a family-style brunch at Flava. Their 25 May celebration includes a special kids' menu, playful decorations, and fun surprises – making it ideal for little ones and their grown-ups alike. Stylish, delicious, and laid-back – just what Sundays are for.
