Finding public toilets in Budapest can be a bit of a challenge. That's partly because the city has several different operators. It's even trickier for those with limited mobility, as many toilets are tucked away in underground passages only accessible by stairs.
Maps
The City of Budapest’s map highlights toilets operated by these organisations, along with those in shopping centres, making it a useful tool to keep on hand. It's most user-friendly on a desktop, though a bit less practical on mobile. A bonus? The map also indicates which toilets are wheelchair accessible.

Apps
If you're on mobile, try the following! The BudapestGO app lets you filter for public toilets, using the same database as the city's map. Not using BudapestGO? No worries – there are other options. Try Where Is Public Toilet for Android and Flush Toilet Finder & Map for iOS. These rely on user-uploaded data, so they might not be 100% trustworthy, but they do come with handy features like toilet ratings.
Restaurants and cafés
Beyond classic public toilets and shopping centres, plenty of cafés and restaurants in the city will let you pop in when you need to go – no purchase required. Józsefváros (Budapest's 8th district) is leading the way with its Public Toilet Campaign, part of the community budget initiative. Here, you can use facilities at spots like Csiga Café, Gólya Presszó, Hintaló Iszoda, and Kis Lumen, or even Auróra. You'll find a similar setup in Erzsébetváros, where many places clearly mark at the entrance whether their toilets are free to use.
