Budapest is getting its very own Time Out Market! If you've ever visited Time Out Markets in Lisbon, Dubai, Boston, New York, or Barcelona, you already know why this is big news. But if you're new to the concept, we're here to explain what it's all about. One thing is for sure: it will be worth the wait.
What we know so far?
The location – and it's a special one. The market will be housed in the iconic Corvin Palace on Blaha Lujza tér, a beautifully restored historic landmark. Once a party hotspot, the building will soon be buzzing with food lovers eager to sample the best of Budapest's gastronomy. Expect stands from top local restaurants, offering everything from street food to Michelin-starred dishes. All to be savoured at communal tables, just like one big family.
What's Time Out Market?
Call it a foodie paradise or a hedonist's haven – the Time Out Market is a gastronomic hub blending international standards with local flavours. It brings together the city's most sought-after restaurants and chefs, all under one roof. During our recent trip to Lisbon, where the very first Time Out Market was born, we experienced first-hand how simplicity and sophistication coexist beautifully. Whether it's elevated comfort food (like Portugal's famous croquetas) or dishes crafted by Michelin-starred chefs, there's something for everyone. Even the fine dining options come at reasonable prices.
Time Out Magazine x Time Out Market
The story began with Time Out magazine – a name that probably rings a bell if you've ever searched online for 'things to see' in any city around the world. Founded in London in 1968, Time Out has since become a go-to guide for superb recommendations across the globe. In 2007, Time Out launched in Lisbon, and by 2014, they created the first-ever Time Out Market here. The idea was to 'bring the magazine to life' and encourage readers to step out into the real world. Instead of just reading about the city's best restaurants, people could come together to taste their dishes, share lively interactions at communal tables, and even enjoy live concerts.
The concept
As the Lisbon Market's wall proudly states: 'If it's good it goes in the magazine; if it's great it goes on to the Market.' The concept took off quickly, and the formula remains the same in every city – only the top players in the local food scene make the cut. And to keep things fresh, new names can take over the stands every few years, ensuring quality remains top-notch. This appeals to both locals, who can casually pick up a few dishes from their favourite spots (a major win for groups of friends who can’t agree on just one cuisine), and tourists, who get to discover local flavours and the city's best bites all in one spot.
Time Out Market Lisboa
In Lisbon, the Market is such a staple that we were already getting recommendations before we even landed. We wasted no time –heading straight there (and returning more than once). It's a big deal, housed in the old market hall near Cais do Sodré, and it always seems to be buzzing. The long tables in the centre were packed with people chatting away, only pausing to dash off to one of the 26 themed stalls for their next bite.
The selection? Impressive. From seafood and Asian to burgers, pizza, croquetas, pastel de nata, doughnuts, and cheesecakes – you'll be in for a treat. And for those after something extra special, a whole row is dedicated to renowned chefs, including some with Michelin stars. You can mix and match smaller bites tapas-style or opt for a hearty main course. While it’s easy to splurge, you can also enjoy a great meal without breaking the bank. You can grab a drink from one of the central bars to complete the experience!
Anyone who's been to a Time Out Market will likely seek out others, as the concept truly works. It's a cultural and culinary hub, where you can savour top-tier dishes, discover new flavours, and soak up the lively atmosphere. All with the reassurance that every spot has been handpicked by experts.
Time Out Market Budapest
Expect something similar in Budapest: a bustling, professional community and a gastro hotspot where it's great to be and even better to eat. Whether you’re with a small group or a crowd, you’ll get to taste dishes from curated restaurants and top chefs, all in one of the city’s most central locations. Time Out Market Budapest is set to open in the second half of 2025, and while the list of restaurants is still under wraps, if you follow We Love Budapest, you'll be among the first to hear all the exciting updates.
