Last Thursday, the Danube submerged the city’s lower embankments before peaking at 830 centimetres on Saturday. The scenery left all passersby in awe – such a massive body of water isn’t something you see every day. Check out our photos of the flood!
After days of preparation and waiting, Budapest can finally breathe again. The worst seems to be over; the Danube has started to recede, reaching 7 metres 29 centimetres at 8 am on September 23rd. The water level is expected to drop to 6.5 metres by tomorrow. The M2 line is back in service along its entire route (now stopping at Batthyány tér), however, suspended tram lines will need a bit more time before they can hit the road again. The flood is expected to exit Hungary by September 25th.
