Hugo's Mexican Bar & Kitchen opened four years ago on Molnár Street, just a short walk from Fővám Square. Inspired by a trip to Mexico, the owners set out to bring the country's vibrant flavours to Budapest. Their vision has been shared from the very beginning by the restaurant's head chef, who travelled to Mexico to learn traditional cooking techniques and gain first-hand insight into the country's culinary traditions.
A little taste of Mexico in the heart of Budapest
The interiors are filled with details sourced directly from Mexico. Bold, colourful artwork lines the walls, while skull motifs appear throughout the space - from decorative tiles and shelves to window displays and even the cocktail glasses - creating an atmosphere that's both vibrant and unmistakably Mexican.

Sombrero-inspired straw lamps, colourful details and the eye-catching bar give the restaurant plenty of character. It's the kind of place where you can easily lose track of time over dinner and cocktails. The welcoming team plays just as important a role in the experience - many of the staff have been here from the beginning, so regulars are greeted by familiar faces, while newcomers quickly feel at ease.
The restaurant's different seating areas make it equally suited to larger gatherings with friends or family as they do to a relaxed dinner for two. If you're planning to catch a big match, Hugo's also doubles as a sports bar, so you can watch the action while enjoying tacos, cocktails and the restaurant's signature dishes.

Authentic Mexican flavours, beautifully presented
At Hugo's, classic Mexican dishes are given a subtle contemporary twist without losing the flavours that define them. Rather than dramatically reinventing traditional recipes, the kitchen focuses on making the spice levels approachable while staying true to the cuisine's character. Those who enjoy extra heat can customise their meal with a selection of house hot sauces, ranging from mild to seriously fiery. Across the menu, the bold interplay of chilli, coriander, lime and carefully balanced sweet, sour, salty and spicy notes captures the essence of Mexican cooking. Premium ingredients and eye-catching presentation complete the experience, making each dish as appealing to look at as it is to eat.

The homemade guacamole is an excellent place to start, freshly prepared and served alongside house cheddar sauce with two varieties of tortilla chips. Among the starters, the bacon-wrapped jalapeños stuffed with cream cheese quickly became one of our favourites - creamy, smoky and pleasantly spicy all at once. The roasted pepper and avocado salad with mango is another standout, and can be topped with either chicken or prawns for a more substantial dish.

Beef naturally takes centre stage on the menu, reflecting the traditions of Mexican cuisine, although there are plenty of other options too, including chicken and grilled salmon served with sweet potato purée and mango chilli salsa. Our standout dish was the slow-cooked pork ribs. After several hours of sous vide cooking, they're roasted for a further two hours before being finished over high heat to create a beautifully caramelised crust. The result is wonderfully tender meat with just the right amount of crispness on the outside. Served with fire-roasted potatoes, coleslaw, homemade BBQ sauce and roasted jalapeños, it's a dish that's hard to forget. Another favourite was the chimichanga con carnes: a flour tortilla filled with minced beef, topped with creamy cheese sauce and served with refried beans, sour cream, pico de gallo and rice.

Steak and burger lovers are equally well catered for. The menu features steak fajitas, Angus beef steak and Hugo's signature burger, stacked with a 180-gram beef patty, romaine lettuce, caramelised onions, guacamole, bacon, cheddar and chipotle mayonnaise.

No Mexican menu would be complete without tacos, burritos and quesadillas, and Hugo's offers plenty of choice. Served in gluten-free tortillas, the tacos come with a variety of fillings, including beef, pork, prawns and lamb, while vegetarians will also find thoughtfully prepared alternatives across the range.

To round off the meal on a sweet note, the dessert menu features Mexican-inspired treats such as the dulce de leche volcano - a warm caramel fondant served with mango and vanilla ice cream - alongside a passion fruit crème brûlée. We opted for the churros, which arrived crisp and coated in cinnamon sugar on the outside, while remaining wonderfully soft within. Paired with the smoky mezcal chocolate sauce, they made for the perfect ending to the meal.

Cocktails with a Mexican twist
Complementing the food is a thoughtfully curated drinks menu that goes well beyond the classics. Alongside signature cocktails, you'll find a wide selection of Mexican spirits, including tequila, reposado, añejo and mezcal, as well as a carefully chosen range of rums and gins. For a more authentic experience, tequila is served the traditional Mexican way, accompanied by a tomato-based sangrita rather than the familiar salt and lime.

The cocktail list features all the Mexican favourites, from a classic Margarita and Paloma to the spicy El Diablo, alongside a selection of Hugo's own signature creations. One of the most popular is the Hugo's Sour, served in a distinctive skull-shaped glass and made with 1800 Reposado tequila, passion fruit purée, lime, egg white and agave syrup. Those skipping the alcohol are equally well catered for, with a dedicated selection of creative mocktails.

More than just a restaurant, Hugo's is the kind of place where great food, Latin music and warm hospitality come together to create an atmosphere that lingers long after the meal is over. Its central location makes it an easy choice whether you're stopping by for a leisurely lunch, meeting friends over cocktails after work or kicking off an evening in the city.
