The Danube overflowed its riverbanks in Budapest yesterday, submerging the lower embankments. The water level is expected to peak this weekend, but rest assured, the city is well-prepared. Stay safe and plan ahead, as there are several travel disruptions in place.
As we reported earlier this week, Budapest remains on high flood alert. The lower embankments are already underwater, and the water level is expected to peak at 8.5 metres on Saturday. The river should begin receding by the middle of next week, so be sure to stay updated until then.
Mayor Gergely Karácsony announced that the last steps in flood defence have been completed, preparing Budapest for water levels up to 9 metres. You can check out some fresh photos on his official Facebook page.

The busiest tram lines, including the 4, 6, and 1, will run more frequently to offer a more comfortable ride and accommodate extra passengers during the changes.
Starting today (September 19th), tram 2 will only run between Jászai Mari tér and Kossuth Lajos tér. From Friday (September 20th), the Batthyány tér metro station may be closed. Changes are also expected for tram lines 19 and 41, and bus 226 will not be running over the weekend due to the closure of Margaret Island.
As the Mayor also emphasises, please avoid going too close to the river – the current is incredibly strong. Stay safe and plan your journey using the Budapest Go app, available here and here.
