The gradual handover of the lower Pest embankment to pedestrians and cyclists has become a tradition, established during the pandemic. Although it is only for summer and holiday weekends, it is still one of the best initiatives of the past years. And with a holiday weekend around the corner they are making the lower quay car-free again. This time, it will be a 1-day-long event due to the traffic changes regarding Pope Francis' current visit to Budapest. On May 1st, the road between Margaret Bridge and Elizabeth Bridge will be free of cars.

Useful information and how to get there
The section of the road between Margarete Bridge and Elizabeth Bridge (the Irányi utca exit) is a no-go zone for cars from Sunday night to Monday evening (11 pm). Southbound road traffic can exit onto the quay at the Irányi utca exit. Those driving north from Közraktár utca can leave it at Havas utca.
- You are not allowed to walk on the road between Elizabeth Bridge (Irányi utca) and Közraktár utca. The open quay section can be accessed from the south on the sidewalk of the lower quay or by trams running on the upper quay.
- Those arriving from the Pest end of the Elizabeth Bridge walk south from the Március 15. tér tram stop to reach the quay opening location.
- Until it is fully handed over, the Chain Bridge and the related sidewalk sections are still considered a work area. Those walking/cycling on the opened Pest quay section can take an alternative pedestrian route, just follow the signs!
