The eighth season of Zenélő Budapest starts this Friday, 1 July, taking place at 15 of the most beautiful public spaces in Budapest. Until 14 August, you’ll be able to enjoy a total of 160 free concerts, in a variety of genres ranging from special children’s shows to classical favourites.
“Music is an eternal gift – that’s the buzzword this season. Zenélő Budapest evokes the past centuries of our city, conjuring the atmosphere of bygone eras at special venues around the capital. Underlining our cultural values can be a cohesive force even in these more difficult times. Our common language is music, which proclaims the beauty of life across generations,” says Nándor Götz, artistic director of Zenélő Budapest.
The performers of Zenélő Budapest come from outstanding Hungarian orchestras. Musicians and soloists from the National Philharmonic, the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Opera House, Concerto Budapest and the Budapest Festival Orchestra all perform at this year’s open-air concerts.
These free shows take place outside the Museum of Fine Arts, in the colonnade of the National Museum, at several spots around the Várkert Bazár and Buda Castle, on the terrace of the Hegyvidék Cultural Salon, at the Musical Fountain on Margaret Island, on Kossuth tér, in Orczy Park and the open-air stage of the House of Hungarian Music.
A special feature of the concert series is that each musical piece fits perfectly with the character of the surroundings in which it is played. Every season, Zenélő Budapest also selects a signature classic within the framework of a special artistic performance. For this year, one of the most beautiful works in the canon of modern music, Béla Bartók’s The Wooden Prince, has been reconfigured.
