The Arthur Murray story started in 1912 on the American continent with a simple dance school. The namesake had the privilege to coach such pupils as Eleanor Roosevelt and John D Rockefeller Jr. Now there are 260 studios worldwide, catering to 40 million students. The academy in Budapest is the first in the city, and the first in Hungary.
This American-style
ballroom centre teaches modern, social dances to anyone interested. All
levels are welcome here, because private classes are personalised to students’
needs. A fellow dancer, instructor and manager of Arthur Murray Budapest, Norbert (Norbi) Márki reveals that they’re
unique in the sense that ballroom dance training in English is not available at
other schools in Budapest.
“My students often say that we’re the only academy they find for English-friendly ballroom training. In this studio, every instructor
speaks English and Hungarian as well.”
People reach out
to Norbi and the team with different goals. They teach standard and Latin ballroom dances such as waltz, salsa, bachata, tango, cha-cha-cha and rumba.
“There are people, who want to
learn a choreography for their wedding, others just do it as a hobby and
sometimes dancers come with the aim of training for professional competitions.”
Located on the main shopping street of Váci utca, the studio offers private classes for 10,000
forints/45 minutes. There is no set timetable, during the week you can schedule a
session any time it’s convenient for you, from 8am to 10pm. If you don't have a partner, it's never a problem, you can sway with your instructor.
If
you book, there is a possibility for a weekend training session as well. Group classes for private students takes
place on Thursdays at 7pm.
Try it for free!
“The first lesson is always complimentary, so there is nothing to lose, it’s free of charge.”
Norbi reveals that being part of an international chain enables the Murray family to operate without borders. Apart from their local students, they always welcome students from other affiliated schools from all over the world. “If an active member from another Arthur Murray Academy visits us, they can participate in our group classes free of charge.”
Apart from the regular
private classes, the Arthur Murray community often organise dance camps and other social events. “There is always something to prepare with our students. For those students who want to show off their cool moves, we organise our own dance nights.”
The next one is on 24 July at Elements Bar & Restaurant, in the Business Quarter of Budapest. This is open for everyone, you can pop in and see the show and see what ballroom is like the
Arthur Murray way.
“Don’t hesitate, dive in and you will dance out from the studio.”
