Gellért-hill
Mention sunset and panoramic views in Budapest, and chances are Gellért Hill is the first place that comes to mind. The walk to the top is already a great programme in itself, but settling down once you get there and watching the setting sun cast its glow over the city makes it even better. There are several viewpoints around the hilltop to choose from: if you prefer the classic Budapest experience, head towards the Citadella, while those looking for somewhere a little quieter can make their way to the Garden of Philosophers.
Római-part
The Óbuda riverbank may not offer views from above, but it's still a fantastic spot for catching the sunset - and one that remains surprisingly under the radar, even among those who regularly spend time in the area. Here, the Danube runs from north to south, with the riverbank stretching along its western side, meaning you can not only watch the sun go down but also see its golden light reflected across the water and shoreline. Better still, there are plenty of places along this stretch where you can settle into a comfortable deckchair and simply enjoy the view.
Kopaszi-gát
Kopaszi gát and the surrounding BudaPart area in Újbuda have become increasingly popular places to spend time outdoors - and they're also well worth considering for sunset watching. Not every corner offers an equally good view, though. For the best experience, walk all the way to the end of the dam, find a spot to sit down and simply enjoy the show.
Strázsa hegy
Strázsa Hill is the highest point in District XVII, also known as Rákosmente. The area covers quite a stretch, but for some of the best sunset views, head to Strázsahegy Panorama Park, close to Rákoskert. You can reach it via Strázsahegyi dűlő, and with the airport stretching out in front of you, there's little to obstruct the view as the sun goes down.
Róka-hegyi kőfejtő
In Óbuda, Róka Hill Quarry is another spot worth the climb if you're after both panoramic views and a beautiful sunset. In fact, one of the quarry's biggest draws is the spectacular view from its high rock faces and terraces. It takes a little effort to get there, but the scenery makes the short hike well worth it.
Naplás-tó
Budapest's largest lake, Naplás Lake, can be found in District XVI and serves as a reservoir for the Szilas Stream. Stretching from east to west, the lake catches the warm colours of the setting sun beautifully on its surface. For some of the best views, head to the top of the dam, one of the lakeside jetties or the 22-metre-high lookout tower rising beside the lake.
Óhegy
The highest point of Óhegy Park in Kőbánya is a particularly atmospheric place to watch the sunset. You can catch beautiful views not only from the park itself but also from the surrounding streets, while the Csősztorony offers perhaps the best vantage point of all. This part of Kőbánya sits higher than central Pest, opening up far-reaching views towards the west as the sun goes down.
