Poke is a traditional Hawaiian dish eaten as an appetiser or a main course. The concept – raw fish added to rice and vegetables in nicely decorated bowl – has recently taken off in Budapest. Opened on the first floor of Buda’s MOM Park mall, Yumybo now takes the bowl and runs with it, boldly experimenting, bringing in more colourful and varied dishes. It’s not only delicious but healthy and nourishing, too.

The idea of Yumybo, just opened at the MOM Park mall, came to Zsolt after living abroad for a few years. He was first in Australia, where he ate traditional Hawaiian food for the first time, and then in the United States.

As an avid convert to a plant-based diet, he wondered about the variety of options available for environmentally and health-conscious vegan places.

When he returned home, he wanted to open a salad bar with a friend whose background was in hospitality, but Zsolt felt that he could come up with something better.

After some brainstorming, the concept of Yumybo was born. Since the poke bowl was already popular all over Europe and had found its way to Budapest, they decided to head in that direction while expanding the range by moving away from the original Hawaiian concept.

Poke is defined by what can be put in the bowl, fish instead of meat, but Zsolt did not want to limit himself so much. Flexibility characterises their food, almost anything can be put together with anything in a single bowl, the point being colour and variety

Of course, they also pay attention to taste and harmony, and take into account that Hungarian cuisine is very different from Hawaiian. At home, duck is served with mashed potatoes and sweet red cabbage, and these elements also combine in Yumybo, albeit with a little twist: the cabbage is pickled and sweet potatoes are added.

The ingredients are mostly raw, so everything has a higher nutritional value, making the dish not only healthier but also juicier. The various meats and seafood are prepared sous-vide so there is no frying, smoke or oil – or rather, there is just olive oil and seasoning. The bowls are prepared at their kitchen on Dohány utca and delivered to MOM Park.

Although there are currently ten combinations on the menu, this number will increase and there will be seasonal options, smoothies, soups and more. If someone really likes to experiment, they can put together their own bowl.

In addition to or instead of meat, fish and tofu, a wide variety of vegetables, fruit, sauces and spreads are available.

Prices range from 2,490 to 3,990 forints, depending on the base, from vegetables to chicken, beef, duck, salmon, shrimp and even red tuna.

Yumybo is an extremely fresh, youthful and forward-thinking place. Although aimed at the more environmentally and health-conscious younger generation, they also attract a lot of repeat custom from older guests.
