Currently planning a new tram route to serve the Danube embankment in south Buda, the City of Budapest and Újbuda council are also looking at planting 100 trees to line the riverside.

Taking its name from the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) that runs alongside, Műegyetem rakpart is one of the most underused stretches of the riverbank in Budapest.

Recently, it has come into focus as it adjoins the now trendy boulevard of Bartók Béla út – and because the local authorities are looking at running a tram line along it, much like the celebrated number 2 on the Pest side.

In a recent planning meeting, it came to light that they can also plant a row of 100 trees here just beyond Liberty Bridge, to contrast with the stern façade of the vast BME building that stretches along most of this section of embankment.

Trees and tramlines

We went through the plans metre by metre, looking through every aspect of the design," said town planner and committee chief Samu Balogh. “The Budapest Development Centre understood our position and in most cases accepted our proposal to plant more trees.”
