The multicultural offer around Dohány utca in District VII has just been enhanced with South-American fusion cuisine. La Movida currently awaits lovers of exotic flavours during the day from Thursdays to Sundays, offering hot Latin music in the evening.

Entering the high-ceilinged space, the first-time visitor is immediately removed from the constant traffic of the Nagykörút, and captivated by the Latin mood of the pictures, colours and other furnishings. The menu is also written primarily in the owners’ native language of Spanish, and the customer base comprises a 50/50 split between domestic and foreign diners.

After the Spanish-inspired La Nube and Fuego restaurants, the owners have expanded with fiery South American cuisine on Dohány utca, which has a more diverse range of global dining options than most areas of Budapest.

The viability of a concept based on Mexican, Peruvian, Chilean, Cuban and Argentine flavours is also shown by the fact that they were able to wait until the end of shutdown to provide a fresh impetus to local culinary offerings.

The use of original and high-quality ingredients can be felt in intense starters such as the Peruvian citrus-marinated squid ceviche (HUF 3,650) and the Aztec guacamole with tortilla chips (HUF 1,750). The rich-tasting taco de birria (HUF 1,690) are tacos with beef cheek and two-coloured corn, embellished with coriander.

Among the main dishes, we sampled the tuna steak with crispy grilled vegetables and Cuban black-bean rice (HUF 4,750), and the picaña beef with grilled vegetables (HUF 4,250), served with homemade French fries. Picanha is the most popular cut of beef in Brazil, but is relatively rare here due to different customs. its name is derived from the pole used by ranchers to herd cattle.

When the kitchen closes, the chairs are taken out, the tables are pushed aside, the DJ arrives, and Latin evenings start with cocktails, dancing and partying in authentic fashion.
