With travel restrictions easing and passenger numbers significantly increasing, Budapest Airport saw a daily average of 10,000 travellers passing through in June. These figures are expected to grow substantially in July and August, with 120 destinations to be served from Budapest as opposed to the 90 in June. The rise in traffic should also benefit the Hungarian capital as well, with more hotels opening and increased foreign custom in restaurants.

Figures have just been released showing a huge increase in air passengers using Budapest Airport during June. Of the 600,000-plus travellers arriving or departing in 2021, almost half were recorded for the month of June.

Although the EU Digital Covid ID Card, introduced on 1 July, now eases travel restrictions around much of Europe, Budapest Airport authorities are at pains to stress that travellers should be aware of the regulations at their particular destination before they set off.

The list of countries currently accepting the Hungarian Immunity Certificate is provided on the consular website in Hungarian, although it’s fairly easy to work out, and includes Croatia, Slovakia and Slovenia. The situation is changing all the time, so always check before you depart.

Get on board

The EU Digital Covid Certificate is a huge step towards recovering European aviation passenger traffic,” says Budapest Airport CEO Chris Dinsdale, “because the more reliable and predictable travelling is, the more people get on board again”.

It is no longer mandatory for passengers to wear a face mask at either terminal of Budapest Airport. However, travellers should carry one in their hand baggage, as they must wear it when on board the aircraft and may need it at their destination as well.

It is recommended you arrive at the airport two hours before your flight departs, that you follow the information you receive from your airline. The airport recommends that only passengers enter the terminal, if possible, to minimise the number of people gathered in the building at the same time.
