Negotiations are still ongoing as to when Budapest’s spas, baths, lidos and pools will open. We look at the situation across the board – and look forward to taking the kids to the Palatinus, the Római or Aquaworld this weekend.

With summer soon open us, the question on many people’s lips is, ‘When will my favourite spa open?’ The answer isn’t a simple one.

First things first. The Széchenyi and the Gellért will still be closed for a while. How long, even they don’t know yet. At the moment, these, plus the Lukács, Rudas, Veli Bej, Király and Dandár baths, aren’t open.

As for pools, only registered sportsmen may use institutions such as the Hajós Alfréd on Margaret Island and the Komjádi nearby.

Now for the good news. From this weekend, 30 May, lidos such as the Római Strandfürdő, the Csillaghegy Árpád and every kiddie’s favourite, the Palatinus, are open, as well as the Paskál in Zugló and the Pesterzsébet Jódos-sós way down in south Pest.

Aquaworld is opening in stages, the outer baths and gardens from 30 May, the inner pools from 13 June, with no news yet on the sauna.

New rules apply across the board. Numbers will be limited, flip-flops are a must and social distancing must be maintained, in the sunbathing area, showers and toilets, and when queuing – anywhere that’s not in the water, basically. Showering with soap and water is also mandatory, before and after your dip. Last but not least: wash your hands as often as possible.
