The Basilica Christmas Market, the most imaginative of Budapest's Yuletide fairs, has announced the sad but inevitable news that it will be moving online for 2020.

The Basilica Christmas Market held off from making an official statement, after the Vörösmarty Christmas Market announced in October that it would operate in an online capacity this year, but the unavoidable health risks of the coronavirus make the closure announcement a necessity.

The market, which is located on Szent István tér, was chosen as the most beautiful Christmas fair in Europe by the independent travel portal European Best Destinations, making it especially sad this year that we will not be able to enjoy its splendour. However, it will still be possible to browse the wares and see the handmade goods for sale online.

In their Facebook announcement, market organisers said, “While we know that nothing can replace the joy of personal encounter and celebration, we believe that Advent cannot pass without a shared experience! That is why we are working to make the most of the online space by contributing content, activities and surprises that will be published regularly”.
