The open-air archaeological site revealing the medieval sections of Buda’s Castle District can be visited free of charge from this Saturday, 30 May. Themed Buda Walks are also being relaunched, in Hungarian.

From this Saturday, 30 May, you can visit the outdoor section of the archaeological site at 9 Táncsics utca free of charge. The Buda Castle organisation stressed their health-protection measures, disinfecting the railings every two hours during opening hours and installing hand sanitiser at the entrance to the site. Sales and security staff will wear masks and gloves, and work behind plexiglass.

In 2018, archaeologists attached to Buda Castle and the Budapest History Museum found one of the most significant and best-preserved details of the medieval defence system of this historic complex around the Erdely Bastion.

Visitors can learn about the hidden treasures of the 16th-century fortress, and take part in free guided tours (Hungarian-only) at weekends and public holidays, upon registration.

From May 30, themed Buda Walks will be relaunched, revealing hitherto unknown paths of the Buda Castle, the most interesting episodes of the near 800-year history of the Castle District and the main developments of the two-year National Hauszmann Programme, aiming to clean up and survey the area. Guided by Hungarian-language text, you can admire the royal gardens, learn about the wine history of Buda and roam the Castle District. Numbers will be limited to ten per walk. Devices will be disinfected with UV light after each use and you may bring your own earphones.
